Creator for the first time, to know the true warmth of love. While the Hopi
prophecies ascribe no calendar date to the coming of the red light of the new

Betelgeuse is enshrouded by vast clouds of gas and dust, so measuring
its size is difficult. To cut through this cocoon, Charles Townes of the
University of California, Berkeley, and colleagues used a set of
telescopes that are sensitive to a particular wavelength of the star's
infrared light.
But the star's reach seems to be waning. New observations indicate
the giant star has shrunk by more than 15 per cent since 1993. This
could be a sign of a long-term oscillation in its size or the star's
first death knells...
The team used these instruments to measure the size of Betelgeuse's
disc on the sky. Over a span of 15 years, the star's diameter seems to
have declined from 11.2 to 9.6 AU (1 AU, or astronomical unit, is the
distance from the Earth to the sun)... The cause for this reduction is
unknown, as it is unclear how red supergiants behave near the end of
their lives.
One may easily identify similar patterns in the energy fluctuations of
both red supergiant Betelgeuse and our own small yellow Sol. The contraction
and collapse of Betelgeuse is being mirrored on the Sun, which has seen a
prolonged period of spotless inactivity for the period of 264 days preceding
the appearance of Sunspot 1024 in July of 2009. Both stars dimming together
represents the contraction before the full strike of the wave, as the
supernova's energy reaches the Earth.
Plasma physicists proposing the
Electric
Universe theory have keenly observed the pulsed throughput of energy
that generates the dynamics of stellar interactions, overturning the false
notion of stars as independent thermonuclear generators with their own
self-determined lifecycle. The lifecycles of stars are actually intertwined
with the cycling waves of energy that traverse the spiral arms of our
galaxy. Galactic waves are generated as pulsations of infrasound emitted
from the center of our galaxy that traverse its arms, gaining momentum from
the radiated energy of supernovae that are set off by the wave's influence
in a chain of events moving outward. Red supergiant Betelgeuse, at the
shoulder of the constellation Orion, is the nearest in a chain of supernovae
events along the expanding wave front, and acts as our local indicator by
which we can estimate the arrival time of the galactic wave.
Further analysis of the data obtained by the UC Berkeley team should also
provide the rate of acceleration of the stellar collapse and give us a
fairly good estimate for the moment of supernova. Considering the fact that
Betelgeuse is our close neighbor at about 600 light-years distance, this
event has already occurred and the nova will be visible to us in just a few
years time. So, when exactly will the electromagnetic wave hit Earth, and
how will it affect us?
Certainly, the Betelgeuse supernova will be seen as a major flash of
light plainly visible even during the daylight hours. The 'nova may shine
very brightly for many days. The more complex unfolding of events triggered
by the supernova involve many factors not commonly understood by
astrophysicists. For time indications of the potential hazards and benefits
of these electromagnetic changes we must turn to the most ancient and most
accurate calendar system known to man. Mayan wisdom gives us an exact date
for the change of the ages (December 22, 2012), and an exact sign is given
as well - the Red Sky.
The Maya use of sacred celestial waters within the pyramids for healing
and longevity is an open invitation to sacrifice the false comforts of urban
society that disrupt the natural acoustic environment and isolate people
from electrical contact with the Earth. Industrial man finds dissonance and
disease in concrete boxes, whereas resonance and longevity are to be found
in the celestial waters and barefoot lifestyle practiced at sacred sites.
The Maya invite us all to come together as one: "The cycle of years is past
- the waiting ended. Come - reunite, pilgrims, for the sky is in flames!
From Xochicalco to Teotihuacan the red spreads one step, another step, and
another..."
Yaqui Elder Don Juan
spoke of waiting for the 2012 event during his teachings to cultural
anthropologist Carlos Castaneda, stating emphatically: "[As seers] our case
is a bit different, because we are at the end of our trail. We are not
seeking anything... we go from day to day doing nothing. We are waiting. I
will not tire of repeating this: we know that we are waiting and we know
what we are waiting for. We are waiting for freedom!" The progressive
energetic changes currently raising human consciousness will cause fear and
panic only for those who are unprepared, while many spiritually awakened
individuals have been preparing for the Purification Day. Apache Elder
Stalking Wolf related his profound visions of the future in the
Prophecy of the Red Sky,
received in the 1920s and later published by Tom Brown Jr.:
Grandfather spent the next four days at the cave entrance, though for
those four days nothing spoke to him, not even the Earth. He said that
it was a time of great sorrow, of aloneness, and a time to digest all
that had taken place. He knew that these things would not appear in his
lifetime, but they had to be passed down to the people of the future
with the same urgency and power with which they had been delivered to
him. But he did not know how he would explain these unlikely events to
anyone. Surely the elders and shamans of the tribes would understand,
but not society, and certainly not anyone who was removed from the Earth
and Spirit.
He sat for the full four days, unmoving, as if made of stone, and his
heart felt heavy with the burden he now carried. It was at the end of
the fourth day that the third Vision came to him. As he gazed out onto
the landscape towards the setting Sun, the sky suddenly turned to a
liquid and then turned blood-red. As far as his eyes could see, the sky
was solid red, with no variation in shadow, texture or light. The whole
of Creation seemed to have grown still, as if awaiting some unseen
command. Time, place and destiny seemed to be in limbo, stilled by the
bleeding sky. He gazed for a long time at the sky, in a state of awe and
terror, for the red colour of the sky was like nothing he had ever seen
in any sunset or sunrise. The colour was that of man, not of Nature, and
it had a vile stench and texture. It seemed to burn the Earth wherever
it touched. As sunset drifted to night, the stars shone bright red, the
colour never leaving the sky, and everywhere the cries of fear and pain
were heard.
Again, the warrior spirit appeared to Grandfather, but this time as a
voice from the sky. Like thunder, the voice shook the landscape. "This,
then, is the third sign, the night of the bleeding stars. It will become
known throughout the world, for the sky in all lands will be red with
the blood of the sky, day and night. It is then, with this sign of the
third probable future, that there is no longer hope. Life on the Earth
as man has lived it will come to an end, and there can be no turning
back, physically or spiritually. It is then, if things are not changed
during the second sign, that man will surely know the destruction of the
Earth is at hand. It is then that the children of the Earth must run to
the wild places and hide. For when the sky bleeds fire, there will be no
safety in the world of man."
Grandfather sat in shocked horror as the voice continued. "From this
time, when the stars bleed, to the fourth and final sign, will be four
seasons of peace [that is, one year]. It is in these four seasons that
the children of the Earth must live deep in the wild places and find a
new home, close to the Earth and the Creator. It is only the children of
the Earth that will survive, and they must live the philosophy of the
Earth, never returning to the thinking of man. And survival will not be
enough, for the children of the Earth must also live close to the
Spirit. So tell them not to hesitate if and when this third sign becomes

Grandfather said that the voice and red sky lingered for a week, and
then were gone as quickly as they were manifest.
Apache Grandfather Stalking Wolf experienced visions of the dramatic changes
that have since occurred, and are yet to come, providing us with the
culminating event marking the emergence of a new solar era. However, there
are multitudes of more subtle signs of these oncoming electromagnetic
changes that can be understood only in this context. The effects of shifting
gravity and enhanced electromagnetic fields have been documented all over
world, especially in areas where we find pyramids, or megalithic structures.

emphasizes, "when the sky bleeds fire, there will be no safety in the world
of man." All of the modern electrical technologies of humanity will not only
cease to function, but will endanger human beings by spontaneous combustion.
The surprising ignition of plastic-sheathed copper wiring was first noted in
1859 when a massive solar ejection shorted out and then ignited
telegraph lines across the entire United States and all of Europe, and
auroras were seen as far south as Rome and Hawai'i.
Periods of elevated infrasound resonance have generated hundreds of fires
in homes across the world. These resonant fires are located in the nodes of
an infrasound standing wave pattern that is increasing in intensity,
eventually requiring the complete evacuation of residents from areas like
Tenerife,

One of the most interesting incidents of this kind recently occurred in
Soesterberg,
Netherlands where, on the morning of July 19, 2009, ball lightning
descended on the town in an unprecedented series of events. Residents
reported fast-moving ball lightning in more than 100 homes that sustained
extensive damage to electrical systems. One eyewitness described a purple
beam of light that shot skyward through the roof of one home. The fact that
nobody was injured in Soesterberg is remarkable.
Clearly, modern civilization's embrace of electrical wiring is becoming a
dangerous trap in many parts of the world, eventually threatening to kill
anyone who cannot return to a life close to spirit and in the natural places
of the Earth. Even high above the planet, infrasound drumming has been
reported on multiple occasions onboard the
International
Space Station (ISS) in 2004 - the result of an infrasound resonance of
standing waves that will inevitably destroy the station's systems as it has
in many homes far below:

Right now .. within half a day, or so, of this writing, I'd say .. we on
Earth are witness to our annual ecliptic longitude conjunction with Betelgeuse
in the Orion constellation.
We (Earth) are directly in-line with (in alignment with) .. our Sun and with
the ecliptic longitude of Betelgeuse .. right about .. "now" .. (as most of you
read this).
Our Sun is between Earth and Betelgeuse .. aligned longitudinally, relative
to the ecliptic.
By "now" .. I mean fairly early on June 19th, 2001 .. in the first half of

THE LOCATION OF BETELGEUSE
Hanging from Orion’s belt like a sword is the Orion nebula, a nursery of
newly born stars. Below and to the right of the belt is the hot blue giant
Rigel, quickly burning up its fuel. Its life will be short, just a few millions
of years, as compared to the 10 billion year life of the sun. When the sun does
die, it will look something like Betelgeuse, the red star on Orion’s upper left
side. Betelgeuse is gigantic, swollen to 1,000 times the diameter of the sun as
it dies of old age. In five billion years our sun too will swell malignantly and
it will turn to ash all life on our now blue planet. But, just perhaps, new eyes
will be being born on planets near the stars now just coming to life in the
stellar nursery hanging from Orion’s belt.
Watch for Orion lower and lower in the sky as it gets toward summer, in the
west after sunset, the three stars of the belt hang parallel to the ground.
After that, Orion will not be seen again until early mornings in late summer,
when the appearance of Sirius, the Dog Star, announces the dog days of August.
Pyramids mirror Orion Constellation: The pyramid positions on the ground are
a reflection of the positions of the stars in the constellation Orion circa
10,400 B.C. Five of the 7 brightest stars have pyramid equivalents: The 3 great
pyramids of Khufu, Khafra, and Menkaura for the belt of Orion, the pyramid of
Nebka at Abu Rawash corresponds to the star Saiph, the pyramid at Zawat al Aryan
corresponds to the star Bellatrix. The only two missing star positions are for
Betelgeuse and Rigel.

This star and Castor are known as the Gemini Twins. These two stars lie
nearly halfway between the Big Dipper and Orion. They form a conspicuous matched
pair. A line from Rigel through Betelgeuse points to Castor. Pollux, the
brighter star of the two, lies immediately below Castor. Remember: Pollux is
near Procyon and Castor is near Capella.

A line drawn from Pollux to Sirius passes almost through Procyon, the little
dog star, which is located to the SW of Orions belt. A large arc can be drawn
from Sirius, to Procyon, Pollux, Castor, and then up to Capella.

The "pointers" of the Big Dipper lead up to the Pole Star (Polaris) and down
to Regulus. This star may be found easily, as it is situated at the end of the
handle of the "Sickle" (also the head of Leo, the Lion.) and is the brightest
star in the group.

The southeastern most star in Orion This Bright star is located immediately
to the east of the belt and equidistant across the belt from Betelgeuse.
SIRIUS (18) Mag -1.6
The Dog Star is the brightest star in the sky. The three stars in Orions Belt
point directly down to Sirius. A nice arc is formed by Capella, Castor, Pollux,
Procyon and Sirius.

"I had seen on the computer simulation that Venus makes its retrograde
movement slightly to the right-hand side above Orion. But, was that true? Wasn't
the screen giving an unclear image? I therefore decided to go to Urania, a star
observatory and planetarium near my home. On an "open day" they simulated
planetary movements, and I asked them to plot the movement of Venus in 2012. It
was projected on an immense screen on which you could clearly see the
circle-shaped movement. Some adjustments relating to the angle of the earth in
relation to Venus were made, in such a way that Betelgeuse and Bellatrix came to
lie aligned beneath Venus. The outcome was sensational!"
"In 2012 Venus will stand still exactly above Betelgeuse, a red super
giant, and will make its retrograde loop. But this is not all. Venus also stands
still above Bellatrix after which it will continue its loop! This means
therefore that Venus will make an exact circle-shaped movement above the most
important and highest stars of Orion, among which is found Betelgeuse! You
cannot imagine a more spectacular code than this one! By this and other reasons
am I so convinced of the fact that 2012 is the date of the next cataclysm."

Venus passes before the Sun on the sixth of June 2012. She will be in the
middle of the Sun at exactly 1.30 AM.
Venus will be in the middle of her retrograde loop the fifth of June at
20.18 PM. This means that Venus will stand in the middle above Orion while it
passes before the middle of the Sun! Hence the connection from Venus, Orion and
the Sun.
It is for this obvious reason that these scientists took this code as a
warning for the End Times! The glyphs from my book The Orion Prophecy will
become much clearer now!"

, if the software ("Loadstar"), showing the 2012 loop of Venus to
the right of Orion is inaccurate, it is quite amazing that the
independent software package, SkyGlobe, shows the exact same
configuration for 2012 (see 2003 update, above). If both these packages
have got the 2012 configuration wrong, and Venus will actually reach
standstill in its loop above Betelgeuse, thus matching the pattern that
Geryl and Rattinckx found for 9792 BC, then this means the modern
software packages can't even predict the position of Venus just a
decade from the event, so surely their configuration for the pattern in
9792 BC is far more unreliable than the pattern they predicted for 2012!
In order to prove his point, Mr. Geryl needs to get the observatory to
show him the pattern for 9792 BC. The need for this confirmation for the
9792 position is heightened by the 2003 update above, in which we found
that SkyGlobe disagreed with the pattern for 9792 BC, and found that the
SkyGlobe version of the 9792 BC pattern actually matched the pattern for
1609 AD!
The Venus Transit of 2012, which happens during the loop, may well
be significant (it is already covered in several places on this site)
and the Venus retrograde loop may also be significant (see 2012 & crop
circles page), but as for any evidence that there was a catastrophe in
9792 BC, and that Atlanteans encoded the pattern of Venus looping over
Orion as a warning of a repeat catastrophe in 2012; the evidence is
still absent.

Birth and Death of Venus.
In The
Mayan
Prophecies,
Adrian Gilbert said that he
used astronomical software called
SKYGLOBE to look at the sky as it was at dawn, on 12 August 3114 BC
(where he dates the beginning of the Great Cycle). He found that as the
Pleiades were on the meridian, the Sun was preceded by Venus as the
morning star. This he took to be the mythical “Birth of Venus”
associated with the start of the Great Cycle. Just as in ancient Egypt,
the dawn rising of Sirius heralded the flooding of the Nile and the
beginning of a new year, and the meridian transits of Orion correlated
to the First Time and Last Time of Osiris; to the Maya, the meridian
transit of the Pleiades announced the “Birth of Venus” as it rose over
the horizon.
Gilbert
used SKYGLOBE to check the sky on 22 December 2012 (where he dates the
end of the Great Cycle), and found that, just before sunset, as the
Pleiades rise over the eastern horizon, Venus sinks below the western
horizon. This, he thinks, is the symbolic “Death of Venus”, indicating
the start of a new precessional age.

has said in his book
Worlds in
Collision, that the Birth of Venus occurred when Venus was “born”
from Jupiter. A cosmic collision caused a part of Jupiter to burst out,
becoming a comet, and leaving the famous red spot where it burst out.
This is clearly illustrated in the Greek myth of Athene who
sprang from the head of Zeus, making Mount Olympus tremble and stirring
the sea, (Athene, reasons Velikovsky, is the planet Venus, and Zeus is
the planet Jupiter). Velikovsky dated this event as contemporary with
the Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt, explaining the plagues and
parting of the Red Sea. Several Mayan and Aztec myths were also cited as
evidence, including the fact that Quetzalcoatl, which means feathered
serpent, is the well-known name for the planet Venus. It was also called
“the star that smoked”. Velikovsky quotes from Brasseur de Bourbourg’s
Histoire Des Nations Civilisees
du Mexique:
“…the sun
refused to show itself and during four days the world was deprived of
light. Then a great star …appeared; it was given the name
Quetzal-cohuatl …the sky, to show its anger…caused to perish a great
number of people who died of famine and pestilence…It was then…that the
people [of Mexico] regulated anew the reckoning of days, nights, and
hours, according to the difference in time.”

This
would explain the Mayan obsession with Venus, and we can now see why the
Birth of Venus has been associated with the start of the Great Cycle.
However, Velikovsky dated the event around 1500 BC with the Exodus.
Graham
Phillips has also convincingly explained the events of the Exodus as
side-effects of the eruption of the volcano Thera (in his book
Act of God), but Nigel Appleby has unified the theories with that of
Nibiru, the tenth planet (see
item 27).
The
existence of
Nibiru
was postulated by Zecharia Sitchin
in his book
The Twelfth Planet-(12 counting the Sun and Moon). Ancient Sumerian
mythology implies that there is a large planet –Nibiru- on an elliptical
orbit, which enters the solar system every 3,600 years. Velikovsky and
Sitchin actually used the same Sumerian myth as part of the evidence for
their respective theories (the Marduk and Tiamat myth). According to
Sitchin’s chronology, the next return is due in 3400-3600 AD.
Appleby suggests that it was Nibiru that caused the disasters of the
Exodus as it “shunted both Earth and Mars close to each other’s orbit…”
and that it was this which triggered the eruption of Thera. However,
Velikovsky didn’t say Mars was involved in the original Birth of Venus
incident, but two later ones around 700 BC. Anyway, it IS an interesting
idea, since it provides a large passing body to interfere with Jupiter
and cause the ejection of Venus. What is more, it would mean that Nibiru
is due to return soon (1500 BC to 2000 AD =3500 years), as Appleby
suggested: 2012 - 2036 (see
item 27).
If
we prefer to correlate the Birth
of Venus incident to 3114 BC, then the implication is that the Great
Cycle is measuring the period of return of some OTHER huge planetoid
(see items 8
& 10),
due in 2012, on Snake Day.

If there's one thing I've realized when writing articles about space, is
that it is very easy to link a mysterious astronomical phenomena with doom. If
not doom for Earth, certainly doom resulting in a huge explosion of some kind,
destroying something, somewhere...
Mystery = Doom
Let's look at a very simple example: In 1983, NASA's Infrared
Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) carried out the first ever space-based survey
of the entire sky at infrared wavelengths.
IRAS spotted some mystery infrared objects (make a note of the word
"mystery"). This would be expected, I suppose, as this was the first survey
of its kind.
The Washington Post picked up on NASA's initial findings and published
an article entitled "Mystery
Heavenly Body Discovered," in which the author lays out some
possibilities for these infrared objects. Initial reports postulated that
one of these objects could be a long-period comet, or a planet, or a far-off
young galaxy or a protostar.
Innocent enough, you may think. However, this one news article planted
the seed of an
entire
Planet X doomsday scenario that has given root to countless YouTube
videos, doomsday books and now,
a Sony Pictures movie, to be released in November.
It's of little concern to doomsday "believers" that these mystery
infrared objects were identified as ultra-luminous young galaxies far, far
away, and not a nearby Earth-killing
"Planet X". Doomsday theories stick, no matter how much evidence there is to
the contrary.
Shrinking Stars and Supernovae
So, today I read about the incredible observation by astronomers that
the famous red supergiant star Betelgeuse is shrinking.
According to University of California, Berkeley astrophysicists, over
the last 15 years, Betelgeuse has shriveled by 15% in diameter.
This is a startling observation in my opinion. Although the star has
undergone no variation in luminosity, to be able to distinguish a 15%
reduction in size of a star some 600 light years away is astonishing. The
supergiant isn't even an "easy" star to observe; as it's so old, it's
undergoing some violent changes, blasting hot gas into space, shrouding its
surface from view. Only by using the extremely sensitive Infrared Spatial
Interferometer (ISI) on the top of Mt. Wilson in Southern California,
researchers were able to see through the haze and measure the star diameter
with such precision.
On reading through the
Berkeley press release, there is no mention that this shrinkage could
indicate Betelgeuse is about to explode. Granted, the 15 year shrinkage is a
"mystery" (there's that word again), but the star has been known to vary in
size in the past. In fact, it is known to pulsate in size with periods of
one and six years. Also, the rotational period of Betelgeuse is once every
18 years; simulations suggest the star is not spherical,
so the shrinkage could be an illusion, we are seeing a potato-shaped
disk on its thinnest edge.
Despite all these factors,
Fox News
runs with the title "Nearby Star May Be
Getting Ready to Explode." Using the Berkeley press release as a
source, and quoting all the facts mentioned above, they've put two and two
together, made five and declared stellar Armageddon.
Oh dear.
They've also made their own prediction right at the end:
It's possible we're observing the
beginning of Betelgeuse's final collapse now.
If so, the star, which is 600
light-years away, will already have exploded — and we'll soon be in for
a spectacular, and perfectly safe, interstellar fireworks show.
Yes, it's totally possible Betelgeuse could explode, but the chances
of this happening in this 600 year window is highly unlikely, regardless how
fast it seems to be shrinking.
Needless to say, the Fox article has done the best on the social
bookmarking sites,
hitting the front page of Digg. Everyone loves a supernova. As for the
"shrinking star" reports, not so much.
This may not have the makings of the next, great doomsday movie plot,
but it is an example how definite conclusions (i.e. a supernova) can be made
from a fairly benign, yet interesting astronomical "mystery".

articles concerning the event is part of the Mayan Calendar 2012 predictions and
the end of the world. But what are the facts about this very unusual event

It is also interesting to note that the name of this red star is Betelgeuse,
is associated with the “Devil” and evil machinations. Yet, the name Betelgeuse
is a corruption of the Arabic word “yad al jauza,” which means the “hand of
al-jauza.”. The word “al-jauza” is an ancient Arabic derivative which refers to
“Central One,” or a mysterious woman
The history of the bright star name Betelgeuse is a good example of how
scholarly errors can slip into modern spoken word. Very early in pre-Islamic
Arabia astronomers, called the star yad al-jawzā’, “hand of the jawzā’.” The
jawzā’ was their name for the constellation Gemini. Greek astronomy blended with
Arabian astronomy, the word was given to the bright star in the constellation
Orion. Centuries later, scribes writing in Medieval Latin rendered the word
misread the y as a b, which became the Medieval Latin form Bedalgeuze. During
the Renaissance era, another set of scholars interpreted the first syllable bed–
as being derived from a putative Arabic word *bāṭ meaning “armpit.” This word
did not exist; it would correctly have been ibṭ. Nonetheless, the error stuck,
and the new etymological spelling produced Betelgeuse, that melded into French
as Bételgeuse, and finally in Late Old English as Betelgeuse.
But here are the scientific facts (theories and conjectures based on
reason):
- One day Betelgeuse will appear as a giant explosion in
the sky, which may be 4 times the size of a full moon.
Most scientists believe the star is far enough away from Earth that the
explosion blast and various particle rays emitted will not affect us
drastically (if at all).
This star is a huge mass of hydrogen gas that is (or did) going through
a fusion process that changes the matter into heavier elements.
It is one of the largest stars known in the universe to human astronomy.
On June 9th, 2009 it was presented to The American Astronomical Society
that Betelgeuse was shrinking. Calculations from 1993 to the present show a
15% decrease in the stars diameter.
It is a pulsating star, whose brightness changes with the density of its
atmosphere: 0.2 – 1.2 brightness magnitude, which makes it one of the 10
brightest stars in our sky.
Betelgeuse is surrounded by many layers of dust and gas that it has
already blown off through a very strong stellar wind and surround the star
in a ring of solar dust.
Betelgeuse is projected by science to be only 6 – 10 million years old.
Science says the star had a core made of hydrogen and thermonuclear
fusion has already run out at its core, thus gravity has contracted the core
into a hotter and denser state. This process fuses helium into carbon and
oxygen which produce enough radiation to swell out its outer layers of
hydrogen and helium.
The red star is relatively rich in nitrogen compared to a less evolved
star like our Sun (Lambert 1984).
In 1995 astronomers found an enormous bright area more than 2,000 °K,
hotter than the surrounding surface of the star (Gilliland & Dupree, 1996).
Betelgeuse’s diameter is roughly 500 times that of the Sun.
If and when it turns into a supernova the threat to Earth would be from
the blast waves. Is Betelgeuse one of the “smoking stars” to which
Nezahualcoyotl referred in his 15th century Aztec prophecy? It probably will
not cause any direct physical destruction, due to the huge distance between
Betelgeuse and the Earth. But then again.

was going to wait to write about this, but I’m getting a lot of emails
about it, so I’ll say something now, and followup when I get more
information.
The story:
BABloggee Alereon (and many others) sent me to an interesting site:
Life After the Oil Crash Forum — a forum that apparently has a lot
of doomsday-type scuttlebutt posted to it.
An anonymous poster there says he has heard that the star Betelgeuse
is about to go supernova, maybe as soon as a few weeks:
I was talking to my son last week (he works on Mauna Kea),
and he mentioned some new observations (that will no doubt get
published eventually) of “Beetlejuice”; it’s no longer round. This
is a huge star, and when it goes, it will be at least as bright as
that 1054 supernova…except that this one is 520 light years away,
not 6,300 [...]
When it collapses, it will be at least as bright as the full
moon, and maybe as bright as the sun. For six weeks. So the really
lucky folks (for whom Betelgeuse is only visible at night) will get
24 hour days, everybody else will get at least some time with two
suns in the sky. The extra hour of light from daylight savings time
won’t burn the crops, but this might. Probably, all we’ll get is
visible light (not gamma rays or X-rays), so it shouldn’t be an ELE.
It’s sure gonna freak everyone out, though…..
Then it will form a black hole, but we’re too far away for that
to matter.
The buzz is that this is weeks/months away, not the “any time
in the next thousand years” that’s in all the books.
The basic takeaway:
OK, folks, first: when news like this comes from an unnamed
source on some random forum, and that source is not even a primary
one, and that secondary source quoted is also unnamed, and that
person heard it from a third party that is also unnamed… well, oddly
enough my skeptic alarm bell in my head rings loudly enough that my
eardrums explode outward in every direction at the speed of light.
I hope I’m being clear here.
The first important thing to note here is that if Betelgeuse
explodes, we’re in no danger at all. It’s too far away to
hurt us. Got that? It’s the most important thing to
remember here, because I’m quite sure this story will get wildly
exaggerated as it gets repeated.
So, what’s the deal with Betelgeuse? What is it, will it explode,
and if so, when?
The details:
Betelgeuse is one of the brightest stars in the sky. That’s
because it’s an intrinsically luminous star, and one that’s
relatively close by. By luminous, I mean something like 100,000
times that of the Sun, and by close I mean roughly 600 light years
away if not more. That’s 6 quadrillion kilometers, or almost 4
quadrillion miles. In other words, quite a hike.
Betelgeuse is a red supergiant. It has a mass of something like
20 times the Sun’s, and is near the end of its life. When it dies,
it will explode as a supernova, a titanic event that is among the
most violent in the Universe. For details on how this happens,
read this essay I wrote about it.
It’s hard to know just when a star will explode when you’re on
the outside. Betelgeuse might go up tonight, or it might not be for
100,000 years. We’re
just not sure.
Betelgeuse isn’t round, and it’s shrinking!
In the bulletin board post, he talks about the star not being
round. It’s unclear,
but it sounds like he’s referring to observations which show
that there is a big plume coming from the surface of Betelgeuse.
That was exciting news when it was released, but not hugely
surprising; stars are active, and massive stars even more so. Also,
note that those "new" observations are a year old!
That image above is from even earlier, and shows a Hubble
observation of Betelgeuse taken in 2005. Note here that the star
doesn’t look round, but that’s an illusion. The image shows a hot
spot in Betelgeuse’s swollen atmosphere, and that makes it look like
a bump is hanging of the side. In reality, that’s just because of
the way the image is printed, and isn’t an actual physical bump. But
the hot spot (probably due to a big ol’ bubble of hot gas rising
near the surface) in itself shows that things on the star change all
the time; just recently
two such spots were found.
The post also talks about Betelgeuse shrinking. That claim is
from
observations made over the course of many years. Those data
indicate the star is shrinking, but it’s unclear what they mean.
While it may mean the star is in fact shrinking, starspots (sunspots
on another star)
may be fooling us, for example. Also, red supergiants aren’t
like marbles, with a clean, sharp surface. They are balls of gas,
extended and bloated, so there is no real surface. It’s therefore
entirely possible the astronomers aren’t even really measuring the
surface of the star at all, and it’s just the highly extended
atmosphere that’s changing.
Surface tension, rotten to the core
The point I’m making is that a lot of stuff can happen on the
surface of the star that has nothing to do with the core. Since it’s
the core that generates the star’s energy and
eventually causes it to explode, what’s happening on the surface
is not an indication of any impending explosion.
Mind you, the surface and the core do "talk" to each other,
though slowly. As the core changes, that information does leak to
the surface, but it takes centuries. Until, that is, the core
collapses. When that happens, the shock wave takes hours or days to
get to the surface, and the star explodes. But that’s hardly a slow
event taking decades! So any changes we see happening now probably
have little to do with what’s happening hundreds of millions of
kilometers deep in the star.
Also, it’s been known for a long time that Betelgeuse is a
variable star; its light output changes. This shrinking may just be
a part of that natural cycle, and again no indication of an
explosion.
Having said all that, I’ll note that someday, Betelgeuse will
explode. That’s for certain! But it’s also way too far away to hurt
us. A supernova has to be no farther than about 25 light years away
to be able to fry us with light or anything else, and Betelgeuse is
25 times that distance (which means its power to hurt us is weakened
by over 600x). It’s the wrong kind of star to explode as
a gamma-ray burst, so I’m not worried about that either.
At that distance, it’ll get bright, about as bright as the full
Moon. That’s pretty bright! It’ll hurt your eyes to look at it, but
that’s about it. The original post says it may get as bright as the
Sun, but that’s totally wrong. It won’t even get 1/100,000th that
bright. Still bright, but it’s not going to cook us. Even if it were
going to explode soon. Which it almost certainly isn’t.
Conclusion:
So my personal opinion is that this is just another breathless
rumor of astronomical doomsday that we get every couple of years.
Even if any of the science of it is right, it doesn’t mean
Betelgeuse is about to explode any day now. And since this is a
rumor three times removed, I don’t put any stock in it. I’ll wait
until I hear from named scientists with published or publishable
data before I start to wonder if the star is about to blow.
And if and when it does explode, it can’t hurt us. Someday it
will — maybe not for a hundred thousand years, but someday — and
every astronomer on the planet hopes it happens in their lifetime!
It will be a scientific bonanza unlike any ever seen.
