The Shadow side of the Tree of Life

4-5-09 - DREAM - I was managing a large apartment complex.  I was in bed with someone when I woke up in the morning. I was on the left.

Next to the bed on the floor, on the right side, three men were gambling - one of which was a handsome blonde man named David.  (means love)

During the day, we had a work crew painting the apartment building both inside and outside.  I was spray painting the outside of the building white.  Everything inside was also being painted white.

I took a break during the day, and inside the apartment was the blonde David again, talking to two other young men - both black - in a corner alcove where it was dark.. We briefly joked around about moving a bookcase that was in the corner of that room if the young black men wanted to hide their faces behind it.

I went back outside to finish the outside of the building.  When I was done with my work, again I saw the blonde David on the opposite side of the building, and he said something about his side of the building was too shiny or something like that.

Just then, a young black woman named Glory came up to me and told me that she had completed the apartment she was painting.

The blonde David, who was in charge of the painting schedule,  told her to go to the other end of the building and paint apartment 405.  She said "Okay!" and started to leave, but before we all went back to work, another older black man came out of the elevator, and said that a young man I had seen with the blonde David earlier (he looked like Antonio Vega from One Life to Live TV show) was in the elevator and had been stabbed in the chest.  He said the knife was on the floor of the elevator with the young black man - also named David.

Glory and I both got frightened, and started to go up the nearest stairway, and I closed the bottom door on the stairway and locked it, so I was on the stairway with Glory so that the person who had done the stabbing couldn't get to us..

Somehow, the young man black man David who had gotten stabbed on the elevator, jumped up, grabbed the knife, ran around the side of the staircase and stabbed Glory in the back from outside the staircase.

I didn't know that the stairway was open on the side and when the young black man named David he stabbed the black woman named Glory, my eyes flew open and I was awake.

I rolled over and looked at the clock to see what time it was -  it was 4:45

TODAY IS PALM SUNDAY

7 A.M. VISION - I saw a game in which, when you move three squares together that match in color - they cancel each other out and disappear, allowing the row above to move downward one row.  So, in the vision, I moved one yellow square upward which made a line of 3 horizontal yellow squares which canceled each other out - and the vision showed that it equaled  4 4 5

I've dreamed about HOD before, which I wrote about at great length here:

http://www.greatdreams.com/Qabalah/hod.htm

Below, I will write just about the pertinent information to this particular dream.

It is important to note that there is a black and white David, and a black Glory as you will see below illustrated as to how that works.

HOD - GLORY - SPLENDOR

HOD is the Hebrew word for glory. It is through this Sephiroth that God's judgment comes down to the world. The name of God associated with HOD is Elohim Tza'va'ot. HOD and Netzah form the beginning of the lower half of the World of Assiyah (Action), where Adam and Chava were expelled to after receiving their garments of skin. Rav Sha'ul spoke of the spiritual body received during the resurrection in 1 Corinthians 15:39-48

The meaning of the name Chava:

The girl's name Chava \ch(a)-va\ is of Hebrew origin, and its meaning is "life".

Chava has 9 variant forms: Ava, Chabah, Chaya, Chayka, Eva, Eve, Hava, Haya and Kaija.

I Corinthians 15:39-48

Vs. 39 All flesh is not the same flesh, but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of beasts, another of fishes, and another of birds.

Vs. 40There are celestial bodies and bodies terrestrial; but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another.

Vs. 41 There is one glory of the sun, another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for one star differs from another star in glory. In other words, there is a different brightness, that's what Paul is talking about.

Vs. 42 So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption.

Vs. 43 It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power.

Vs. 44 It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. And that body is what you and I will have when Jesus Christ returns. We will be composed of spirit. We will be composed of spirit! And, it goes on and says:

Vs. 45 And so it is written, 'The first man Adam was made a living soul.' The last Adam was made a quickening spirit. One who knows no death.

Vs. 46 Howbeit, that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural, and afterward that which is spiritual.

Vs. 47 The first man is of the earth, earthy; the second Man is the Lord from heaven .

Vs. 48 As is the earthy, such are also those of the earth... In other words, we are physical; we have flesh and blood just like Adam. ...and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly. In the resurrection and the change, we'll become...you and I have been created, to be changed, from mortal to immortal, that is the design for you and for me.

COMPARING NETZAH AND HOD

Netzah (victory) on the right continues the downward flow of giving from Chesed, but now it is charged with the power of determination. Netzah is the power to overcome all the obstacles in its way. This is God as Man of War. The human archetype of Netzah is Moses, the great leader of Israel who overcame Pharaoh, took the Jews out of Egypt, and led them through the desert for 40 years. HOD (glory) is the opposite of Netzah. It is restraint like Gevurah but now God is giving boundaries to creation in order to reveal His Glory within it. In a human being, it is the surrender to God, standing in awe at His grandeur. The archetype of HOD is Aharon the High Priest, who presided over the Temple service. Yesod (foundation) is the third of the second triad. Like tiferet above it, Yesod unites the opposites of Netzah and HOD and channels the energy down into the seventh Sephiroth Malchut. Yesod is the Sephiroth of procreation and the archetype is Josef, who was sold into slavery by his brothers but who rose to become the viceroy of Egypt.

HOD/GLORY and it's relationship to Chanukah

Hanukkah / Chanukah is observed for eight nights, starting on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar, and may occur from late November to late December on the Gregorian calendar

The Jews light a total of 15 candles during the first 5 days of Chanukah (besides the candle that lights the others - the Shammash), and this number also has something special particularly with the 5th day of Chanukah. But in addition, the number 15 also is related to the whole holiday. The Vilna Gaon points out that the different holidays correspond to the various spiritual emanations (Sephiroth), which are Kindness, Strength, Splendor, Triumph, Glory, Foundation, and Kingship. The one for Chanukah is the Sefira of Glory/HOD. HOD is the Gematria of 15!

HOD also has the meaning of Hodaya/Thanksgiving, and as we say in the Chanukah prayers of Haneirot Halalu & Al HaNissim - Lehodot U'Lehalel L'Shimcha HaGadol - "to give thanks and praise for Your Great Name". Thus, indeed it is the Sefira of HOD that is most related to Chanukah, the only other eight day holiday besides Sukkot when we say the FULL Hallel.

In Talmud Berachot 58a, it quotes the verse "To You, Hashem is the Greatness (meaning Kindness), Strength, Splendor, Triumph, Glory..." (Chronicles I 29:11). Quoting Rabbi Akiva, Greatness is the splitting of the Reed Sea, Strength is the death of the firstborn Egyptians, Splendor is the giving of the Torah, Triumph is Jerusalem, and Glory is the Beit HaMikdash/Holy Temple. Now, bearing in mind that Glory/HOD is the Gematria of 15, we see another parallel of this number to the Beit HaMikdash. On Passover, when we celebrate it with the Seder on the night of 15 Nissan, and we read the Haggadah which has 15 parts to it, we sing the famous song of Dayenu. In it, it lists 15 different favors/gifts that Hashem gave us. The 15th and last one is the Beit HaMikdash! (In the Hagaddah, it is called the Beit HaBechira - House of Choice, the name that the Rambam/Maimondies gives for the laws of the Beit HaMikdash). Now, if you take a look in the above Talmudic source, you will see that no explanation is given for the last two Sephiroth which are mentioned in the original source in Chronicles. So the question can be asked - why does it end with HOD/Glory and not with Kingship? We'll answer this a little later on.

Usually, when we talk about Sephiroth, it's usually between Passover & Shavuot when we count the Sefira - the daily count from 1 to 49 days. Corresponding to these 49 days, you have the above Sephiroth/Spiritual Emanations that start with Kindness in Kindness, Strength in Kindness, etc., and then the 2nd week beginning with Kindness in Strength, Strength in Strength, etc. Well, the fifth week corresponds with the Sefira of Glory, and starting with Kindness in Glory, it continues to...Glory in Glory - HOD ShebaHod. Can you figure out what day this is? This is Lag Ba'Omer - the 33rd day of the Omer, the famous celebrated day of the Yahrzeit of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai. It's the 5th day of the 5th week, and this day is especially related to the rabbi who started revealing the Kabala which later became what is known as the Zohar, which means brightness, related to light, thus relating to Chanukah, the holiday of lights. In any event, we see an amazing thing here - we see a correlationship here between the number 5, and the name Shimon. First we see that the leader of the tribe of Shimon brought his sacrifices on the 5th day from the Mishkan dedication, and then we see that Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai (Rashbi for short) passed away on the 5th day of the 5th week of the Sefira period. And why did this rabbi achieve such greatness as being the kabala man, something that no one was known as such in Jewish history until he came along?

You see, Rishi is another Jewish hero, who followed in the footsteps of Matisyahu. Matisyahu had no fear killing the Hellenistic Jew who dared offer a pig on the altar, and Rashbi had no fear speaking his mind on the Romans. When he was together with a couple of other rabbis, one of whom spoke in praise of the Romans' accomplishments, Rashbi spoke his mind saying that whatever they did was only for themselves. Now mind you, this was at a time that the Romans controlled the land of Israel following the destruction of the 2nd Temple which the Romans were responsible for. The next thing you know, the Romans were hunting for him to have him executed, and Rashbi with his son Elazar hid in a cave for 13 years. No doubt that it was this time in his life that he reached unfortold spiritual heights which led him to reveal the Kabbala.

Another point about Chanukah as especially related to the 5th day when we read the sacrifices of the leader of the tribe of Shimon, is that according to a Hassidic book called B'nei Yissachar which has interesting Torah thoughts, Gematria, etc. about Shabbat, Rosh Chides, and holidays - the Jewish months corresponds to the Jewish tribes in the order that the leaders of these tribes brought the sacrifices following the Mishkan dedication. Thus, the tribe of Shimon corresponds with the 5th month of Av. It was in the beginning of this month on Rosh Chodesh that Aaron the first Cohen Gadol/High Priest passed away, and as the Torah tells us, the entire Jewish nation mourned him for 30 days for his role in making peace between everyone, thus for that entire month of Av. Also, the seven special guests of Sukkot, who are Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Aaron, Joseph, and David, correspond to the above seven Sephiroth. Thus, Aaron corresponds to the Sefira of HOD/Glory, and is the ancestor of the Chashmonaim family from Matisyahu who brought us the holiday of Chanukah which corresponds to the Sefira of HOD/Glory! (It's interesting to note that Rabbi Isaac Luria, the famed Kabbalist following Rashbi, passed away on the 5th day of the 5th month of Av).

TREE OF LIFE

“And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.  And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.”                -- Genesis 2:8-9

THE TREE OF LIFE IN THE ZOHAR.

http://tzion.org/Tree_Sefiroth.htm#Chart

When you are standing inside the Tree of Life, it is reversed from looking at it from the outside.

In 1997, I saw the tree of life made of everlasting moving gold light.  It was so beautiful, I cried when I saw it.

We have this image posted on several pages, but this is the one I got it from:

http://www.greatdreams.com/tarot/28th_path.htm

It is about the 28th path on the Tarot/Tree of Life - and the Vaults of Heaven.

Person in the Tree

http://www.crystalinks.com/kabala.html

Sometimes it is confusing trying to figure out the left and right Pillars of the Tree of Life and the symbol interpretations. In certain cases they seem reversed. For example, the masculine side of the Tree is associated with love, forgiveness, compassion, and intuitive abilities. In our world, many would say these are more feminine than masculine. Another example is that Venus, sphere 7, is on the right masculine Pillar, and associated with Jesus, Lucifer, and Quetzalcoatl (Kulkukan), the Feathered Serpent of Mesoamerica.

I believe the confusion can be resolved because it is said that when we view the Tree from without, it is like a mirror image. When we picture ourselves inside the Tree, as illustrated above, the various symbolic attributes are reversed.

THE BLACK WHITE ASPECTS OF THE TREE OF LIFE

Integrating The Shadow

The graphic above illustrates the shadow Tree behind the Tree of Life. It is a symbolic way of showing the idea of The Shadow side of the self, that needs to be integrated. The following is an excerpt from Jude on the subject --

The journey of the soular hero
Jude Currivan PhD
http://www.judecurrivan.com/media-articles/articles/the-journey-of-the-soular-hero/

Along the long journey that was still to unfold, I found myself discovering that to become whole I needed to recognize and accept all of myself, light and shadow. Only when were ready to take this third step can we integrate – in-to-great - all aspects of ourselves and begin to heal our dismembered psyche. As we do so though, something almost miraculous happens.

As though a veil is being lifted, we begin to see beyond the limitations of the polarities that pervade the manifest world to the wholeness that lies beyond. We all dissipate our energies to some degree by dwelling on the past or projecting our hopes or fears into the future.

Carl Jung was a leading proponent of the idea. Here is an excerpt --

Jungian Psychology
http://www.systemsthinker.com/interests/mind/jungianpsychology.shtml

The Shadow is Carl Jung's term for all of the aspects of ourselves that, due to inner conflicts resulting from our upbringing, socialization, traumas or from other origins, have been rendered unacceptable to us and that we therefore repress, suppress, deny or disavow through the use of our defense mechanisms.

The Shadow can consist not only of parts of us that our culture at large would view as shameful or destructive, but may also include a 'Golden Shadow' made up of otherwise constructive talents and strengths that, for one reason or another (i.e.: they posed a threat to an authority figure's status), were not valued or were shamed by influential people in our lives. Elements cut off from consciousness within the Shadow may exert an enormous unseen influence in our lives and relationships.

As long as we refuse to acknowledge their existence within ourselves, they threaten to project themselves onto others, with the potential for either exaggerated idealization, as may occur in hero worship or romantic attraction, or intense demonization and scapegoating. Indeed, the very occurrence of such experiences points to a likely unconscious origin within some aspects of our own Shadow.

The Celestial Tree of Life

Around 1998, I received an e-mail from a young man. He informed me that one of the graphics in may article about the 1999 solar eclipse was quite like another -- a diagram of the of a three-dimensional version of the Tree of Life projected into the celestial vault. He directed me to this web page --

The Unified Field of Gnosis:
The Gnomon, The Labyrinth & The Celestial Tree of Life
Vincent Bridges
http://www.sangraal.com/AMET/research/gnomon.html

The idea is to  imagine oneself in the center, with the Tree projected all around. The upper two graphics below show the two hemispheres of the projection, Northern on the left and Southern on the right. The various spheres of the Tree of Life, with the corresponding numbers, are depicted.

Sphere 1, Kether, is aligned with the North Ecliptic Pole, and sphere 10, Malkuth, with the South Ecliptic Pole. Sphere 6, Tiphareth, is on the ecliptic, shown at four points on each diagram. Spheres 4 (Jupiter) and 5 (Mars) are in the North. Spheres 7(Venus) and 8 (Mercury) are in the South. The spheres are related to various celestial objects. In terms of the Valentine's Day 2009 alignment, Jupiter and Mars may show a duality in the Northern vault of the heavens, while Venus and Mercury show a duality in the South. Sphere 2 (fixed stars) is in the center part of the North, while sphere 9 (the Moon) is in the center part of the South.

The lower two diagrams are my creations, based on four triangular shapes, which correspond to the Barbury Castle pictogram crop formation of 1991. A number of coincidences happened with the idea. The lower left diagram fits will with Ezekiel's vision of the Four Living Creatures. See --

String Theory as Geometry & Tree of Life

From Joe Mason's page: http://www.greatdreams.com/joestuff/jude/jude.htm

What about the numbers in the dream?

Prime Factors of 405=3x3x3x3x5.

405 is a 13-gonal Number.

405 is a 42-gonal Number.

405 is a 136-gonal Number.

405 is a Pentagonal Pyramidal Number.

Fortunately, a scholarly person has done all the work for me (us) and gives us the answer in great detail:

Bible Chronology

THE '405-YR' TOTAL CHRONOLOGICAL MARGIN

REVEALS DESIGN

THIS DOCUMENT IS INTENDED TO BE READ AS AN ATTACHMENT TO THE MORE COMPREHENSIVE DOCUMENT ON 'CHRONOLOGY.'

This attachment shows the total New Testament variants[1] of 405 yrs to be of divine intention. This is evident by both the patterns it produces (see 'Chronology'), and (as discussed in this document), in that the total of '405' is shown to be a significant number in and of itself; in that it interconnects with itself, both on a ten-times, or one-tenth (of itself) basis.

120, AND 1,200-YR PATTERN

We start with this one pattern before we show how the total NT variant of 405 is significant in and of itself.

First we take a look at the 1,200 yrs from the flood to the exodus and then explain how the '405' relates to it.

{The 'Yeshua' code (ELS) is at 120 letters too. See 'Chronology,' for the standard and accredited dates that we use. Examples in this document use the 'minus 2-yrs' at the flood due to Gen. 5:32; 11:10, as explained in the main chronology document. }

Flood yr as spr 2646 BC, to spr 2645 BC.

2646,5 BC + 1,200 (400 x 3) = spr 1446,5 BC (exodus / tabernacle.)

The exact months and days of the flood narrative line up with those of the exodus especially when using the half-yr-New-Yr switch.

If we subtract the full 405-yr margin, the product of NT revelation, then the date of the flood is 2241 or 2243 BC (i.e., 2646/8 + 405 yrs). Since "400 yrs," (the round number in Gen 15:13, for their time in Egypt), composes the last 400-yr segment of the 1,200 yrs from the flood unto the exodus, the loss of the NT "405" helps divide the 1,200 into three equal parts, (as 1,200 or 800 yrs from the flood). Likewise, scripture divides Moses' life into three even periods of 40 yrs. Furthermore, the 40-yr loss (of the LXX 1Kg 1:6 variant), can align the 1,200 yrs from the flood as either unto when Moses was 120 yrs old, or, as 800 yrs unto when he was 80 yrs old. (Note the '120-yr period unto the flood,' of Gen 6:3, also.)

As for exact periods of 400 yrs, we allow the span to start from the flood or the death of Lamech (father of Noah) who died 5 yrs earlier. {This 5 yrs is appropriate for several reasons.}[2]

2651 BC (max-Lamech's death), less the 405 = 2246 BC (min-Lamech's death) + 800 yrs = 1446 BC (exodus)

The 5 yr gap occurs frequently in the numbers because on a ten-time level, it designates half-a-day or yr. The dates of the creation vividly illustrate this.[3]

Next, we repeat this again, (of a actual interval connecting with itself on a times-ten level as did the 120 of Moses and at the flood, with 1,200), except we use the mirror-exodus this time rather than the actual exodus. Both of these examples (of what was just said and will be said), are also in turn connected, but we will not go into detail now. (Essentially, we have a 120 + 120 + 120 = 360 yrs (as one 'yr'), + 40 = 400-yr-pattern, and repeated on a times-ten level. But see example using ELS in 'chronology.')

40.5, 405, & 4,050, INTERCONNECT

First, a look at the '405' (of the three NT variants), and '4,050' (of Bible numbers, which we explain shortly), using the LXX-exodus of 1406 BC, along with the 'traditional' date of MT-1446 BC.

2645/6 BC flood yr, + 4,050 = AD 1406/5 (mirror of Canaan entry, but exodus w LXX -40).
AD 1406 (as exodus) + 405 = birth of Isaac, the son of promise.
Hence, from alternate (min) flood date of less 405 (2241 BC), + 4,050 yrs = birth of Isaac.

Furthermore, the Bible breaks down this same span of 405 yrs, (from the exodus to Isaac's birth), into the same segments of time as the three NT variants did, (i.e., 215, 60, 130 yrs, and LXX -40, too), even though they are not directly related to one another other than by this pattern.

{We will quote directly from a typical computation of the chronology of the patriarchs (taken from 'The Expositor's Bible Commentary') in order to assure the reader that the connecting of the three NT variants with actual periods of time of the same duration, (i.e., during the patriarchs), is not contrived but matter-of-factly taken from the Bible. We use LXX-dates for this pattern though the commentary is using the MT. This in no way contradicts the quote itself.}

"The date of Abraham's birth is computed by adding 215 to the 1876-BC date that marked the coming of Jacob and his family to the land of Goshen. The 215 yrs are computed from the age of Jacob at the time he moved to Egypt–130 (Gen. 47:9), the age of Isaac when Jacob was born–60 (Gen. 25:20, 26), and the age of Abraham at the time of Isaac's birth–100 (Gen. 21:5)." (Gleason Archer, 'T. E. B. C.' Vol., 1, pg., 365, 6.)

AD 1406 (LXX mirror-exodus) + 215 = 1621 (LXX mirror-entry to Egypt) + 130 yrs = AD 1751 (LXX mirror-birth of Jacob) + 60 yrs = AD 1811 (LXX mirror-birth of Isaac).

Ponder closely:

Thus, the 405 less at the flood (= 2241 BC), with its three-part breakdown, is likewise 4,050 yrs to each of the dates in the above chart. Furthermore, 4,050, plus 405 = 4,455, (i.e., as from the max flood to Isaac's mirrored birth, LXX), even so, 405 (of the three major variants), plus the minor variant of -40 of 1Kg 6:1, equals 445, (or, one-tenth of the previous total). Add to this the extra half-yr-New-Yr switch possible for when Isaac entered Egypt (as being 130.5 yrs old), and we have a total of 445.5 yrs, (or exactly one-tenth of above total variants). Therefore, the total yrs from the max flood to Isaac's birth (MT & LXX) of 4,050, with its additional 405 (as above), agrees with the total variants in use to create this effect in the first place (i.e., 405, with LXX -40). This, along with the fact that each individual part (i.e., 215, 130, 60, 40), are also being advanced to significant events in the mirror of the lives of the patriarchs, is strong evidence that it was designed this way.

Furthermore, 1Kg 1:6 (of our LXX -40), states that the temple was built either 3½ or 4 yrs after king David's 40.5-yr reign (2Sam 5:5). Hence, we have both one-tenth and one-hundredth of 4,050 and 4,455 yrs as well.[4]

Solomon's temple begins in 966 BC, spring, – 480 yrs to exodus (MT), or, – 440 yrs (LXX).
spr 966 BC, – 3½ yrs = aut 970 BC, – 40½ yrs of David's reign. = spr 1010 BC, {See endnote [5] for why David's reign thematically connects with Solomon's temple.}
3.5 + 40.5 = 44 (one tenth of the LXX reading of '440').
Or, spr 966 – 4 yrs = spr 970 BC, less 40½ = aut 1011 BC,
4 + 40.5 = 44.5 (one-tenth of total variant reading. I.e., 40 + 405 = 445)

The '4,' is one-tenth of the LXX -40 variant, here at 1Kg. The 40.5 (of David's reign) is one-tenth of total NT variants (of 405), and 40.5 is also one-hundredth of Daniel's three numbers of 4,050, and, or, + 30, etc., see next chart). The '480 days' that David spent in a foreign land immediately prior to his 40½-yr reign (1Sam 27:7) yield other patterns too (that we cannot describe at this time), and correspond to the 440 and 480 yrs of 1Kg 1:6.

The 405(0) pattern is still more intricate; Ezekiel's '430' combines with 2300, 490, 1260 of Daniel (the total of 4,050), as well.

(Flood) 2645 BC + 4,050 (2300 + 490 + 1260) = AD 1406 (LXX-exodus) + 430 of Ezekiel and of the period in Egypt.
Or, similarly, 2645 BC + 4,080 (2300 + 490 + 1290) + the 400 yrs in Egypt (Gen 15:13).

It is possible to use the '1290', rather than its shadow '1260', (1290 has intercalary month), for a total of 4,080 yrs (i.e., 2300 + 490 +1290). The '4,080' would then be 10-times the total variant gap of '408'. A '408-yr' gap is the extreme fringe of possibility when using MT in combination w NT. The missing 3 yrs are calculated as follows: The difference of the "2 yrs" from Gen 11:10; Gen 5:32. Next, subtract (as Jewish tradition does, see endnote '3' of 'Chronology'), rather than add the ½-yr-New-Yr-switch, ---a full one-yr difference, (215 + 60 + 130 + 2 + ½ + ½ = 408.) For example, Lamech's death (max-2653 BC) + 408 yrs = Lamech's death (min-2245 BC), + 4,080 = AD 1836 (LXX-entry into Egypt), etc.

ENDNOTES

1.) The above variants are related to the four numbers of Ezk 4:4-9. For example, the '130' is one-third of 390 (MT, Ezk 4). The '130' + '60' = 190 (of LXX, Ezk 4), and the 215 is half 430 (MT, Ezk 4). Their total of '405,' is approx. the round "400 yrs in Egypt," of Gen 15:13. (The "400 yrs," here, is the root of the 430, 390, and 40 of Ezk 4.) Furthermore, the total of '405,' is times-10 the '40' of Ezk 4.

2.) As we said in part 'A' of Chronology, the standard Hebrew genealogies put the creation at 4304 BC, spring. This is an exact 4,300 yrs to the death of king Herod, and when Christ and His parents left Egypt. The time in Egypt up until when the Passover Lamb was slain (and Pharaoh died in the Red Sea), is also an exact 430 yrs (Ex. 12:41).

Ezekiel (4:5-6) is told to lay on his side 390 days for Israel and another 40 for Judah, for a total of 430 days that symbolized yrs (i.e., the same length of time spent in Egypt). In like manner, after 390 yrs in Egypt, Moses tried unsuccessfully to rescue his brethren from Pharaoh but had to flee and wait another 40 yrs. Consider the symmetry of the following:

Spr, 4304 BC (creation of Adam), less the additional half-yr = aut, 4305 BC ( = 4,300 yrs to birth of Christ, "the last Adam," 1Cor 15:45.)
4305 BC + 405 (the effect of NT variants) = aut, 3900 BC, (3,900 yrs to traditional conception of Christ in the mirror in March 25th, 1 BC).

The above chart shows that the approximate 5-yr gap between the traditional and actual birth of Christ symbolize a mere half-yr when viewed on a times-10 level. This agrees with the half-yr gap between Christ and his forerunner, John the Baptist (or, certainly unto the 'magnificat', Luke 1:26,37,56). This half-yr combines with the 2 or 3 yrs that Herod inquired of the Magi concerning when the Christ was born, to create the "time, times, and half a time," in reverse order, (see Rev. 12 in comparison with Matthew's birth narrative, and with Dan 9-12). "Two yrs old and under," Matt 2:16, in the original Greek may read as 3 yrs old less a day, or as 2 full yrs. The ambiguity of the text is purposeful because it is the inspired Word of God.

When this 5-yr gap is reduced by a tenth, the approximate 35-yr life of Christ itself (including conception, etc.), becomes as 3½ yrs. This first 5 yrs, then, represent the "half-time" of the prophet Daniel. Therefore, Christ's 30th yr, (when he began his 3½-yr ministry), also symbolizes three yrs. {Likewise, note the effect of the 5/6 BC census / birth in its AD mirror. The second census (AD 6) in the Bible, is the mirror of the first, Acts 5:37; Luke 2:2}.

Therefore, the "time, times, and half-time" (3½ yrs), concur not only with the first (i.e., at the general time of His birth), and last 3½ yrs of His life, but also with the whole of His life but on this times-10 level. The effect of this 5-yr gap just explained, when viewed in connection with the (NT) 405-yr chronological gap, underscores the purpose and design of the 405 gap, ---it gives a floating variance of '40,' except on a times ten level, as does the 1Kg 1:6 LXX-variant of a literal 40 yrs.

3.) Noah's birth unto the flood is 600 yrs. This plus the 1,200 to the birth of the nation of Israel out of Egypt, are 1,800 yrs, (1,800 ÷ 360 = 5 yrs.) This 5 yrs corresponds to Lamech's 5 yrs when a day is converted into a yr. Therefore, besides the 120-yr warning unto the flood, the 5 yrs from Lamech's death unto the flood was a warning too. For there are 1,200 yrs to the exodus (a type of flood), and 5 yrs of yrs (1,800) from Noah to the exodus. The '1,200' corresponds with the 120-yr warning, and the '1800' to the 5-yr warning from Lamech.

Lamech's father lived the longest of any man in the world. He died in the same yr of the flood. Perhaps he died in the flood, but more likely, the month before it. (Or, a ½-yrs before it?) If he died before it, which is most likely since he is of the godly seed, then his death was a portent of catastrophe just as Lamech's was. This would then agree with Isaiah the prophet and Jesus the Messiah:

"Come ye, say they, I will fetch wine, and we will fill ourselves with strong drink; and to morrow shall be as this day, and much more abundant. The righteous perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart: and merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come." (Isa. 56:12 - 57:1)

"Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled… For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be." (Mt. 24:37, 38, 39)

4.) 1Chon 29:27 has 40 yrs instead of the exact 40.5 of 2Sam 5:5, to create one-thousandth of 4,050 and of 4,455 yrs too. I.e., the ½-yr gap of the 40 (or 40.5) yrs of David's reign, plus the "4th yr" of Solomon (1Kg 1:6), can create a 4 or 4.5-yr gap. Note the probable ½-yr co-reign of Solomon and David as well, (1Kg 1:30,35,48; 2:12).

Click here for further information and patterns along this line of things, and of David's reign.

5.) There is an exact '40.5' yrs from Moses' attempted deliverance of Israel until the actual, and from the death of Christ unto the prophesied destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70.

WHAT ABOUT NUMBER 445?

444 - God’s Cycle For Change

by Tom Donnan

John 10:10 the thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

Have you been seeing this number? Or have you been walking in the change God brings to His people in 444 day cycles; ending a season in your life. On the 445 day, Jesus begins a new season in your life with Him and the Holy Spirit now in the mix. He uses this cycle to rebuild a portion of your life.

Using an Old Testament Hebrew Lexicon, I looked up the number 444 and its translation in the NAS. Is: Become Corrupt. That’s what happens! Sin enters a family bloodline and corrupts God’s Blessings and stops them from flowing. Again I entered the number 445 and got: God has been gracious. Restoring God’s Blessings to His Children, He uses a 444 day cycle, of ending sins corruption reversing the curses in our lives to Blessings.

Did you have a visitation from the Holy Spirit on 1-20-08?

A new cycle just started on January 20th, 2008. If you start counting on Jan 21st, count 444 days, it will bring you too, April 8th, 2009. That day, Passover begins at Sundown. In this cycle, the Lord Decree’s a door to open in your life. For the next 444 days, Jesus will introduce provisions for ending a season of your life with a rebuilt season designed by Him, on the 445 day. God has begun each one of these cycle with a manifestation of His Holy Spirit, during the nighttime marking the beginning.

Here’s how it works: Gentile issues

I have now walked through four of these cycles. Two of those cycles, God opened a door to end the effects of the sins of the fathers upon my life. Others before me had opened spiritual doors through sin and as the Scriptures say, the consequences flowed down to the third and fourth generation.  I had no knowledge of these things or about my father’s family for that matter, they didn’t talk much. But God had a plan.

I was given a gift of a knowledge download. I became hungry to know more and after work, weekends, I was in the library looking stuff up. Irish mythology, family name, genealogy book by the score, any thing that might have family info in it, I looked into. Once, a librarian was leading down an aisle locating a book I wanted to see. As I followed her, halfway down the aisle, on the left, a book stood out past the rest by one inch. The Holy Spirit said grab it, so as I followed the librarian, I plucked it from the shelf and it was the: “Celtic Year Book”. Inside was St. Donnan and on April 17th they celebrate His Martyrdom for dying for Christ in 618 A.D. I had never heard of Him before and was stunned. And so it went! I would walk through Borders Book store, or any other bookstore, and stopped, bend down to a book and inside would be more family information. I finished this cycle with a binder three inches thick filled with new family knowledge. God wanted me to know! Another Donnan I came to know, Jon, had been doing research for ten years had didn’t even come close to finding what God had led me too.

The point: Lev 26:40 If they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers, with their trespass which they trespassed against me, and that also they have walked contrary unto me;

45 But I will for their sakes remember the covenant of their ancestors, whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the heathen, that I might be their God: I am the LORD.

Deut 28, Blessings and curses Chapter,  God  showed me what we could have in the Lord and what we didn’t have for breaking God’s laws and decree’s .

Towards the end of this 444 day cycle, I got together with several of my family members who are born again and walk in their faith, we prayed to confess our sins and those of our forefathers. We prayed for the breaking of generational cycles. God honored our prayers and change came. With this cycle, Passover came delivering me from the past.

When we sin, we give satan legal grounds to come into our life with consequences and pain. What Jesus was doing was exposing those grounds to us, revealing the truth in Scriptures, within the Bible, to nullify those grounds and set us free from the bondage we existed in. That is why He chose Passover as an ending date, how awesome is that.

Jewish Roots Issue’s

I believe that Jewish people are very spiritually sensitive. If they are not practicing their faith, they are practicing some other type of spiritually. However, God is very clear in Deut 28:20 The LORD will send on you curses, confusion and rebuke in everything you put your hand to, until you are destroyed and come to sudden ruin because of the evil you have done in forsaking him.

Being God’s chosen race, when Jew’s leave their faith in the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, they bring curses upon themselves and their children.  My mothers grandfather, on her mothers side, I am 95% sure, was Jewish. In the Chicago Stockyards, he was a wagon driver. Having come from Germany, where Jews were not treated well, he left his faith forsaking his God. It was in this 444 days cycle, the Lord showed me this and other actions they had taken which opened doors to evil they hadn’t expected.

Armed with this new information, I met with family and again we prayed for God to forgive our forefathers for forsaking Him and abandoning Him. We also asked for forgiveness of the other things God had shown us along the way.

Current Cycle Revival

It is just beginning, and already it is shaping up to looks like the dynamics of Revival! On January 20th, after the manifestation of the Holy Spirit, I had a Vision. It was so sweet and parts so tender, I keep those private, the message became clear, an inheritance to the church of new believers is coming, Revival.

Asking the Lord for more help to grab onto information, in a dream, I was shown a town that was being cleansed. Giant soap suds were floating down like a snow storm. In the gentle breeze, it covered everything. In 2 chronicles 7:13    "When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people, 14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 15 Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place. 16 I have chosen and consecrated this temple so that my Name may be there forever. My eyes and my heart will always be there.

When we humble ourselves before God, turn from all false god’s and repent, Revival begins. We need to pray for the cleansing of our towns, to pray for our lives to be cleansed before God. We need to pursue Him with all our hearts and all of our minds and with all of our souls. To love God with all our hearts, the Scriptures says He will hear us and respond.

Now because this current cycle has just started and it is not totally clear, it may be about personal Revival many of us need. In any case, God has begun a new work in me/us this January 20th and I am looking forward to the new blessings it brings and the new adventure it will be….  I am not sure who has joined me in this new cycle, maybe you will let me know?

Searching the Bible for references of 444-445 cycles, I found the return to Jerusalem by Nehemiah. King Artaxerxes issued a Decree and gave Nehemiah all the provisions he would need to rebuild the city. 444 years later, the Old Testament had ended and the New Testament began. Here you find the same theme, closing out the old and bringing in the new, but now with Jesus in the mix. That is how God does it in our lives, He opens up a spiritual door in our lives by His Decree, enters provisions to end that spiritual lineage, closes the door on His special day, for us to walk in His life for us, in the Full. A major difference is now satan is out of the picture and we bask under the shadow of God’s wing for generations to come walking in a new spiritual dynamic as never before.

God uses numbers in many ways and there are multitudes of people being quickened by the Holy Spirit to notice them. I say: “Dig deeper” to find out more information, it brings a deeper knowledge of God’s message to us. Also, it brings confirmation beyond a shadow of doubt to our spirits.

On this Journey of Restoration, The Lord has brought me to pray with many people for separation of the sins of the Fathers, and Blessings and Favor. If you would like prayer, click on this link: http://www.tomdonnan.com/TomD10.html

Notes: In searching for info, I did contact several people. Dean Cooper came up with an interest point; in the seven year season, I had four 444 cycles, Dean added them up to tally 1776. That is the year of the United States Independence from Great Britain.

PALM SUNDAY

Palm Sunday is a Christian moveable feast which always falls on the Sunday before Easter Sunday. The feast commemorates an event mentioned by all four Canonical Gospels Mark 11:1-11, Matthew 21:1-11, Luke 19:28-44, and John 12:12-19: the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem in the days before his Passion.

In many Christian churches, Palm Sunday is marked by the distribution of palm leaves (often tied into crosses) to the assembled worshipers. The difficulty of procuring palms for that day's ceremonies in unfavorable climates for palms led to the substitution of boughs of box, yew, willow or other native trees. The Sunday was often designated by the names of these trees, as Yew Sunday or by the general term Branch Sunday.

According to the Gospels, before entering Jerusalem, Jesus was staying at Bethany and Bethphage, and the Gospel of John adds that he had dinner with Lazarus, and his sisters Mary and Martha. While there, Jesus is described by the Synoptic Gospels as sending two unnamed disciples to the village over against them, in order to retrieve a donkey that had been tied up but never been ridden, and to say, if questioned, that the donkey was needed by the Lord but would be returned in a short period of time. Jesus then rode the donkey into Jerusalem, with the Synoptics adding that the disciples had first put their cloaks on it, so as to make it more comfortable. The Gospels go on to describe how Jesus rode into Jerusalem, and how the people there lay down their cloaks in front of him, and also lay down small branches of trees. The people are also described as singing part of Psalm 118 - ...Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father, David. ... (Psalms 118:25-26). Where this entry is supposed to have taken place is unspecified; some scholars argue that the Golden Gate is the likely location, since that was where it was believed the Jewish messiah would enter Jerusalem; other scholars think that an entrance to the south, which had stairs leading directly to the Temple, would be more likely (Kilgallen 210). According to Jewish tradition the one who is able to bridle and ride a colt (or donkey) has a status of Messiah.

Symbolism

The Entry of Christ into Jerusalem, fresco in the Parish Church Zirl, Austria.

It is a common custom in many lands in the ancient Near East to cover, in some way, the path of someone thought worthy of the highest honour. The Hebrew Bible (2Kings 9:13) reports that Jehu, son of Jehoshaphat, was treated this way. Both the Synoptic Gospels and the Gospel of John report that people gave Jesus this form of honour. However, in the synoptics they are only reported as laying their garments and cut rushes on the street, whereas John more specifically mentions palm fronds. The palm branch was a symbol of triumph and of victory, in Jewish tradition, and is treated in other parts of the Bible as such (e.g. Leviticus 23:40 and Revelation 7:9). Because of this, the scene of the crowd greeting Jesus by waving palms and carpeting his path with them has given the Christian festival its name. It also shows the freedom wanted by the Jews, and their desperation to have political freedom. Some argued at this point that most Jews do not recognize Jesus as a messiah, as the song that the people are described as singing, Psalm 118, happens to be the benediction song for the Feast of Tabernacles. They even came as far as saying that the Triumphal Entry must have happened in autumn, during the Sukkot feast (Sukkot is the Feast of Tabernacles). So, we have to state that the sacred scenario of the Triumphal Entry, including chants from Psalm 118 and palm branches, is, in fact, a huge Messianic development. It is true that Psalm 118 and palm branches are used during the Sukkot ritual, but the Sukkot itself has Messianic meanings. These meanings become clear during the 7th day of the feast, called Hoshanah Rabbah (The Great Prayer). So, it is due to such Messianic meanings that Jewish crowds met Jesus chanting the praises of Messiah by verses from Psalm 118: baruk haba’ b’shem Yehwah (Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the LORD; verse 26) and ’anna’ Yehwah, hoshiiah na’ (Save now, I beseech thee, O LORD; verse 25). It is well-known that the Hebrew hoshiiah na’ (I beseech you, save now) was changed in Greek to hosanna, which became a famous Christian term.

But we must add that verses from Psalm 118 were not the only words reported by the Evangels. We can find, by example, in Matthew 21:9 the syntagma hosanna en tois hypsistois (Hosanna in the highest), which combines the hoshiiah na’ of Psalm 118 with the en tois hypsistois of Psalm 148:1 from the Septuagint. We can find references to the Son of David. Everything was used to emphasize the Messianic marks of the day and the strong appeal for the intervention of God.

The next Section, Prophetic Interpretations, will give more details about the Messianic symbolism of this event. But we must bear in mind that Jesus has premeditated every step of the Messianic scenario involved here. This is why He resurrects Lazarus in the view of crowds, this is why He enters Jerusalem coming from the Mount of Olives.

Prophetic Interpretations

Christians often interpret a passage from the Zechariah as a prophecy which was fulfilled by the Triumphal Entry:

Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion!
Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem!
See, your king comes to you,
righteous and having salvation,
gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
I will take away the chariots from Ephraim
and the war-horses from Jerusalem,
and the battle bow will be broken.
He will proclaim peace to the nations.
His rule will extend from sea to sea
and from the River to the ends of the earth.

Matthew quotes this passage from Zechariah when narrating the story of Jesus' entry to Jerusalem. His interpreting of the repetition in the Hebrew poetry as describing two different donkeys: gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey, is offered by some Biblical scholars as a reason for Matthew's unique description of Jesus riding both a donkey and its foal. However, there is an alternate explanation. The full text in Matthew regarding this issue is as follows:

"And when they drew nigh unto Jerusalem, and were come to Bethphage, unto the mount of Olives, then sent Jesus two disciples, 2 Saying unto them, Go into the village over against you, and straightway ye shall find an ass tied, and a colt with her: loose them, and bring them unto me. 3 And if any man say ought unto you, ye shall say, The Lord hath need of them; and straightway he will send them. 4 All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, 5 Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass. 6 And the disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded them, 7 And brought the ass, and the colt, and put on them their clothes, and they set him thereon." (Matthew 21:1-7 KJV)

The Septuagint, in Zechariah9:9 says: "Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Sion; proclaim it aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem; behold, the King is coming to thee, just, and a Saviour; he is meek and riding on an ass, and a young foal." (Brenton) The wording is slightly different from the Hebrew text but one can reasonably interpret from the text that the Messiah, Jesus, will be riding on one of the animals, presumably the ass, or donkey, and that its colt, or foal, will be following behind its mother. To imagine that Jesus would be riding on both simultaneously would indeed present a strange image to mind. Hilary of Poitiers, in one of his sermons on this chapter of Matthew, is of the view that two animals, the ass and its colt, were brought to Jesus and, presumably, those animals were not separated when he rode into Jerusalem: "Two disciples are sent to the village to loosen the ass tied up with its colt and to bring them to him. And should someone ask them why they are doing that, they are to respond that the Lord needs the animals, which must be released to him without delay. From the previous sermons we remember that the two sons of Zebedee symbolize the double vocation of Israel. Therefore, now it is fitting to interpret the two disciples sent to release the ass and the colt as the subsequent double vocation of the Gentiles. It applies first of all to the Samaritans, who abandoned the law after their dissent and lived in a state of dependence and servitude. Yet it also applies to the rebellious and ferocious Gentiles. Therefore the two disciples are sent to loosen those who were bound and arrested by the bonds of error and ignorance."

A widespread Jewish belief states that the Mount of Olives would see the coming of the Messiah (see Josephus, Flavius, Bellum Judaicum, 11,13,5 and Antiquitates Judaicae, XX,8,6). This belief is based upon Zechariah 14:3-4:

Then shall the Lord go forth and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle./ And his feet shall stand in that day upon the Mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east [...]

Possible depiction of Palm Sunday observances by Nestorian Christians in China, wall painting, Khocho, Nestorian Temple, 683–770 AD, Tang Dynasty (Museum für Indische Kunst, Berlin-Dahlem).

The triumphal entry and the palm branches, recall the celebration of Jewish liberation in 1 Maccabees 13:51:

On the twenty-third day of the second month, in the one hundred and seventy-first year, the Jews [led by Simon Maccabeus] entered it [the fortress of Jerusalem] with praise and palm branches and with harps and cymbals and stringed instruments and with hymns and songs, because a great enemy had been crushed and removed from Israel.

The great enemy in Jesus days on earth was the Roman army; and one can imagine that many Jews saw the Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem as the advent of a revengeful Messiah who will wipe out the Romans from Holy Land.

But, then, there is the problem of the donkey. The Babylonian Talmud preserves a question asked by the Persian king Shevor: Why doesn't your Messiah come riding on a horse? If he lacks one, I'll be glad to provide him with one of my best! (Sanhedrin 98a). Indeed, why should the Messiah come on a donkey? The answer stays in the symbolism of the donkey, which in some Eastern traditions seems to be seen as an animal of peace, versus the horse, which is the animal of war. Therefore, it was said that a king came riding upon a horse when he was bent on war and rode upon a donkey when he wanted to point out that he was coming in peace. Thus, the king riding on a colt, the foal of a donkey complies with the epithet gentle or lowly (Hebrew anî - poor, afflicted) and strongly implies the message of peace. This message of peace was always fundamental with Jesus, but it is not clear how well understood was it in those days. In fact, John declares: These things understood not His disciples at the first (12:16). It is highly probable that the public enthusiasm of the day saw the Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem more like a declaration of war against Israel's enemies than a message of peace.

In the book Sanhedrin from the Babylonian Gemara it is written that the Messiah will appear as a poor man on a donkey only if the Jews are not found deserving of the salvation. Otherwise, the Messiah will ride on a horse. Since all humans are sinners, including Jews, it is obvious that the Messiah will always ride on a donkey. However, this is a Christian belief and not supported in Judaism (Jews, for example, do not believe in original sin).

On the tenth of Nisan, according to the Mosaic Law, the lambs to be slaughtered at Passover were chosen. Because of the link of this to the Triumphal Entry, some new interpretations report that the event was not even on Sunday, because Nisan 10 would not be a Sunday if the Crucifixion occurred on Friday the fourteenth. This day in the year of the Passion saw Messiah presented as the sacrificial Lamb. It heralded his impending role as the Suffering Servant of Israel (Isaiah 53, Zechariah 12:10).

The first day of any Old Testament feast was always considered a Sabbath regardless of what day it fell on. The Feast of Unleavened Bread always begins on Nisan the 15th. Passover was celebrated the Evening before. If Nisan the 15th was a Saturday, then Preparation Day (Matthew 27:62) was Friday the 14th, or Good Friday. In any event, that would mean that the events of Palm Sunday actually occurred on Monday, being five days before (John 12:1-12).

If Nisan the 15th was a Friday, however, then Jesus was actually crucified on Thursday, Preparation Day, with Friday being a special Sabbath, a high holy day (John 19:31), and the events of Palm Sunday would be Nisan the 10th, late in the day, (Mark 11:11). Thus the days later that week would be Thursday, Preparation Day, Friday a special Sabbath followed by Saturday a regular Sabbath.

So if there is a relationship between the triumphal entry and the selection of the Pascal lamb on the tenth either Jesus was crucified on Thursday or the events of Palm Sunday happened on Monday. One final option is that Jesus was crucified on Friday the 15th of Nisan. See the article on the Chronology of Jesus for more details.

Observance in the liturgy

The congregation in an Oriental Orthodox church in India collects palm fronds for the Palm Sunday procession (the men of the congregation on the left of the sanctuary in the photo; the women of the congregation are collecting their fronds on the right of the sanctuary, outside the photo.

Western Christianity

On Palm Sunday, in the Roman Catholic Church, as well as many Anglican churches, palm fronds (or in colder climates some kind of substitutes) are blessed with an aspergilium outside the church building (or in cold climates in the narthex when Easter falls early in the year) and a procession enters, singing, re-enacting the entry into Jerusalem. In most Lutheran churches and in many other Protestant churches, a similar practice is followed without the aspergilium.

The procession may include the normal liturgical procession of clergy and acolytes, the parish choir, the children of the parish or indeed the entire congregation as in the churches of the East. In Oriental Orthodox churches palm fronds are distributed at the front of the church at the sanctuary steps, in India the sanctuary itself having been strewn with marigolds, and the congregation processes through and outside the church. In some Lutheran churches, children are given palms, and then walk in procession around the inside of the church while the adults remain seated.

The palms are saved in many churches to be burned the following year as the source of ashes used in Ash Wednesday services. The Roman Catholic Church considers the palms to be sacramentals. The vestments for the day are deep scarlet red, the color of blood, indicating the supreme redemptive sacrifice Christ was entering the city who welcomed him to fulfill- his Passion and Resurrection in Jerusalem.

An Oriental Orthodox congregation in India processes outside its church with palm fronds on Palm Sunday in ancient Levantine Christian rites later continued in attenuated form in Eastern Orthodox, Western Catholic and Protestant rites.

In the Episcopal and many other Anglican churches, the day is nowadays officially called The Sunday of the Passion: Palm Sunday; however, in practice it is usually termed "Palm Sunday" as in the historic Book of Common Prayer, by way of avoiding undue confusing with the penultimate Sunday of Lent in the traditional calendar, which was "Passion Sunday."

In the Church of Pakistan (a member of the Anglican Communion), on Palm Sunday the faithful carry palm branches into the church, as they sing Psalm 24.

 Eastern and Oriental Christianity

In the Eastern Orthodox Church Palm Sunday is often called the Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem, it is one of the Twelve Great Feasts of the liturgical year, and is the beginning of Holy Week. The day before is known as Lazarus Saturday, and commemorates the resurrection of Lazarus from the dead. Unlike the West, Palm Sunday is not considered to be a part of Lent, the Eastern Orthodox Great Fast ends on the Friday before. Lazarus Saturday, Palm Sunday and Holy Week are considered to be a separate fasting period. On Lazarus Saturday believers often prepare palm fronds by knotting them into crosses in preparation for the procession on Sunday. The hangings and vestments in the church are changed to a festive color—in the Slavic tradition this is often green.

Russian Orthodox icon of the Entry into Jerusalem from Tver, 15th century.

The Troparion of the Feast indicates that the resurrection of Lazarus is a prefiguration of Jesus' own Resurrection:

O Christ our God
When Thou didst raise Lazarus from the dead before Thy Passion,
Thou didst confirm the resurrection of the universe.
Wherefore, we like children,
carry the banner of triumph and victory,
and we cry to Thee, O Conqueror of Death,
Hosanna in the highest!
Blessed is He that cometh
in the Name of the Lord.

In the Russian Orthodox Church, Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Ukrainian Catholic Church, and Ruthenian Catholic Church, the custom developed of using pussy willow instead of palm fronds because the latter are not readily available that far north. There is no canonical requirement as to what kind of branches must be used, so some Orthodox believers use olive branches. Whatever the kind, these branches are blessed and distributed together with candles either during the All-Night Vigil on the Eve of the Feast (Saturday night), or before the Divine Liturgy on Sunday morning. The Great Entrance of the Divine Liturgy commemorates the "Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem", and so the meaningfulness of this moment is punctuated on Palm Sunday as everyone stands holding their branches and lit candles. The faithful take these branches and candles home with them after the service, and keep them in their icon corner as an evloghia (blesing).

In Tsarist Russia, there was a formal procession into Moscow on Palm Sunday. The Tsar, himself on foot to show humility, would lead the Patriarch of Moscow, who was seated on a donkey, into the city. The procession would end at the Lobnoe Miesto, a circular stone platform on the east side of Red Square used for public proclamations and executions, upon which a Calvary had been erected. This annual procession continued until 1694, when it was discontinued by Peter I, as a part of his suppression of the church. There is a famous painting of this procession by Vyacheslav Shvarts (1868), which can be seen here, and a drawing in the Mayerberg Album (1661) can be seen here. An embroidery which may depict the scene from 1498, together with a description of its political importance, can be found here.

Traditions

Palm Sunday in Lipnica Murowana in Poland

It is customary in many churches for the worshippers to receive fresh palm leaves on Palm Sunday. In parts of the world where this has historically been impractical substitute traditions have arisen.

 Latvia

In Latvia, Palm Sunday is called "Pussy Willow Sunday," and pussy willows - symbolizing new life - and blessed and distributed to the faithful [1]. Children are often woken that morning with ritualistic swats of a willow branch. People also catch each other and spank each other with the branches [2].

India

Flowers (in this instance marigolds) strewn about the sanctuary in an Oriental Orthodox church in Mumbai, India on Palm Sunday.

In the South Indian state of Kerala, (and in Indian Orthodox congregations elsewhere in India and throughout the West) flowers are strewn about into the sanctuary on Palm Sunday during the reading of the Gospel at the words uttered by the crowd welcoming Jesus, "Hosanna! Blessed is he who is come and is to come in the name of the Lord God." These words are read to the congregation thrice. The congregation then repeats, "Hosanna!" and theflowers are scattered. This echoes pre-Christian Hindu celebrations in which flowers are strewn on festive occasions; however this also echoes the honour shown to Jesus upon his entry into Jerusalem. Indian Orthodoxy traces its roots to the arrival in India of St. Thomas the Apostle in AD 54 (according to tradition) and his evangelism among both the Brahmans of the Malabar Coast and the ancient Jewish community there. Its rites and ceremonies are both Hindu and Jewish as well as Levantine Christian in origin. Spain

In Elx, Spain, the location of the biggest palm grove in Europe, there is a tradition of tying and covering palm leaves to whiten them away from sunlight and then drying and braiding them in elaborate shapes.

A Spanish rhyming proverb states: Domingo de Ramos, quien no estrena algo, se le caen las manos ("On Palm Sunday, the hands drop off of those who fail to wear something new").

Malta

All the parishes of Malta and Gozo on Palm Sunday (in Maltese Ħadd il-Palm) bless the palm leaves and the olive leaves. Those parishes that have the statues of Good Friday bless the olive tree that they put on the statues of Jesus prays in the Olive Garden (Ġesù fl-Ort) and the Betrayal of Judas (il-Bewsa ta' Ġuda). Also many people take a small branch of olive to their home because say that the blessed olive branch keeps away disease and the evil eye (l-għajn ħażina or is-seħta).

 Netherlands

In the Saxon regions of the Netherlands, crosses are decorated with candy and bread, made in the form of a rooster. In the diocese of Groningen-Leeuwarden a great procession with oil lamps is held the night before Palm Sunday in honour of the Sorrowful Mother of Warfhuizen.

Poland

Many Polish towns and villages (the best known are Lipnica Murowana in Małopolska and Łyse in Podlasie) organize artificial palm competitions. The biggest of those reach above 30 meters in length; for example, the highest palm in 2008 had 33.39 meters.

Bulgaria

In Bulgaria Palm Sunday is known as Tsvetnitsa. People with flower-related names, (for example Tzviatko, Margarita, Lilia, Violeta, Yavor, Zdravko, Zjumbjul, Nevena, Temenuzhka, etc.) celebrate this day as their name day.

The Philippines

In the Philippines, there are some places where a re-enactment of Jesus' triumphal entry occurs. The priest rides a horse and is surrounded by the congregation, bearing palms. Sometimes women spread large cloths or aprons along the procession route. Palm branches, called palaspas, are taken home after the Mass and are hung beside, on or above doorways and windows.
