| MORTAL SINS VS VENIAL SINS
MORTAL SIN A. The Catechism of the Catholic Church defines a mortal sin as follows: "Mortal sin destroys charity in the heart of man by a grave violation of God's law; it turns man away from God, who is his ultimate end and his beatitude, by preferring an inferior good to him." (C.C.C. # 1855) "Mortal sin, by attacking the vital principle within us - that is, charity - necessitates a new initiative of God's mercy and a conversion of heart which is normally accomplished within the setting of the Sacrament of Confession." (C.C.C. # 1856) "Mortal sin is a radical possibility of human freedom, as is love itself. It results in the loss of charity and the private of sanctifying grace, that is, of the state of grace. If it is not redeemed by repentance of God's forgiveness, it causes exclusion to make choices for ever, with no turning back. However, although we can judge that an act is in itself a grave offense, we must entrust judgment of persons to the justice and mercy of God." (C.C.C. # 1861) "To choose deliberately - that is, both knowing it and willing it - something gravely contrary to the divine law and to the ultimate end of man is to commit a mortal sin. This destroys in us the charity without which eternal beatitude is impossible. Unrepented, it brings eternal death." (C.C.C. # 1874) VENIAL SIN A. The Catechism of the Catholic Church defines a venial sin as follows: "Venial sin allows charity to subsist, even though it offends and wounds it." (To "subsist" means to "exist.") (C.C.C. # 1855) "Venial sin constitutes a moral disorder that is reparable by charity, which it allows to subsist in us." (C.C.C. # 1875) "One commits venial sin when, in a less serious matter, he does not observe the standard prescribed by the moral law,or when he disobeys the moral law in a grave matter, but without full knowledge or without complete consent." (C.C.C. #. 1862) "Venial sin weakens charity; it manifests a disordered affection for created goods; it impedes the soul's progress in the exercise of the virtues and the practice of the moral good; it merits temporal punishment. Deliberate and unrepented venial sin disposes us little by little to commit mortal sin. However venial sin does not set us in direct opposition to the will and friendship of God; it does not break the covenant with God. With God's grace it is humanly reparable. 'Venial sin does not deprive the sinner of sanctifying grace, friendship with God, charity, and consequently eternal happiness.'" (C.C.C. # 1863) Mortal Sin - Quotes of the Famous Q. What is the difference between a mortal sin and a venial sin? A. For a sin to be mortal, three conditions must exist at the same time. 1. It must be of a grave matter; 2. It must be committed with full knowledge that it is a mortal sin; 3. It must be committed with full consent. [Full consent means to do it "voluntarily."] (C.C.C. # 1857) Grave matter is specified by the Ten Commandments, corresponding to the answer of Jesus to the rich young man: 'Do not kill, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.' The gravity of sins is more or less great: murder is graver than theft. One must also take into account who is wronged: violence against parents is in itself graver than violence against a stranger." (C.C.C. # 1858) "Mortal sin requires full knowledge and complete consent. It presupposes knowledge of the sinful character of the act, of its opposition to God's laws. It also implies a consent sufficiently deliberate to be a personal choice. Feigned ignorance and hardness of heart do not diminish, but rather increase, the voluntary character of a sin." (C.C.C. # 1859) "When the will sets itself upon something that is of its nature incompatible with the charity that orients man toward his ultimate end, then the sin is mortal by its very object... whether it contradicts the love of God, such as blasphemy or perjury, or the love of neighbour, such as homicide or adultery... But when the sinner's will is set upon something that of its nature involves a disorder, but is not opposed to the love of God and neighbour, such as thoughtless chatter or immoderate laughter and the like, such sins are venial." (C.C.C. # 1856) |

or thirsty, and gave thee drink? 38: When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? 39: Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? 40: And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. 41: Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: 42: For I was an hungered, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: 43: I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. 44: Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungered, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? 45: Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. 46: And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal. Luke 10, verses 10 - 14 10: But into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you not, go your ways out into the streets of the same, and say, 11: Even the very dust of your city, which cleaveth on us, we do wipe off against you: notwithstanding be ye sure of this, that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you. 12: But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that city. 13: Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon, which have been done in you, they had a great while ago repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. 14: But it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment, than for you. Luke 11, verses 31 , 32 31: The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and condemn them: for she came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here. 32: The men of Nineve shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here. Luke 13, verses 24 - 29 24: Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able. 25: When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not whence ye are: 26: Then shall ye begin to say, We have eaten and drunk in thy presence, and thou hast taught in our streets. 27: But he shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity. 28: There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out. 29: And they shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in the kingdom of God. Luke 19, verses 12 - 26 12: He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return. 13: And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come. 14: But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us. 15: And it came to pass, that when he was returned, having received the kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called unto him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading. 16: Then came the first, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained ten pounds. 17: And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities. 18: And the second came, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained five pounds. 19: And he said likewise to him, Be thou also over five cities. 20: And another came, saying, Lord, behold, here is thy pound, which I have kept laid up in a napkin: 21: For I feared thee, because thou art an austere man: thou takest up that thou layedst not down, and reapest that thou didst not sow. 22: And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow: 23: Wherefore then gavest not thou my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury? 24: And he said unto them that stood by, Take from him the pound, and give it to him that hath ten pounds. 25: (And they said unto him, Lord, he hath ten pounds.) 26: For I say unto you, That unto every one which hath shall be given; and from him that hath not, even that he hath shall be taken away from him. Luke 20, verses 45 - 47 45: Then in the audience of all the people he said unto his disciples, 46: Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts; 47: Which devour widows' houses, and for a shew make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation. Acts 2, verses 19 - 21 19: And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke: 20: The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come: 21: And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Revelation 11, verse 18 18: And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth. Isaiah 29, verses 20 , 21 20: For the terrible one is brought to nought, and the scorner is consumed, and all that watch for iniquity are cut off: 21: That make a man an offender for a word, and lay a snare for him that reproveth in the gate, and turn aside the just for a thing of nought. Matthew 7, verses 1 - 5 1: Judge not, that ye be not judged. 2: For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. 3: And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? 4: Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? 5: Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye. Luke 6, verses 37 - 42 37: Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven: 38: Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again. 39: And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch? 40: The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master. 41: And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye? 42: Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother's eye. Luke 12, verse 57 57: Yea, and why even of yourselves judge ye not what is right? John 7, verse 24 24: Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment. John 8, verse 7 7: So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. Romans 2, verse 1 1: Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself;for thou that judgest doest the same things. Romans 14, verses 1 - 15 1: Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations. 2: For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs. 3: Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him. 4: Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand. 5: One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. 6: He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day,to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks. 7: For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself. 8: For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the lord's. 9: For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living. 10: But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. 11: For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. 12: So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God. 13: Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumbling block or an occasion to fall in his brother's way. 14: I know, and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean of itself: but to him that esteemeth any thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean. 15: But if thy brother be grieved with thy meat, now walkest thou not charitably. Destroy not him with thy meat, for whom Christ died. 1 Corinthians 4, verses 3 - 5 3: But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged of you, or of man's judgment: yea, I judge not mine own self. 4: For I know nothing by myself; yet am I not hereby justified: but he that judgeth me is the Lord. 5: Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God. 1 Corinthians 4, verse 7 7: For who maketh thee to differ from another? and what hast thou that thou didst not receive? now if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not received it? 1 Corinthians 13, verses 1 - 6 1: Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. 2: And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. 3: And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. 4: Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, 5: Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; 6: Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; James 4, verses 11 , 12 11: Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge. 12: There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?

Exodus 5, verse 21 21: And they said unto them, The LORD look upon you, and judge; because ye have made our savour to be abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to slay us. Exodus 14, verses 11 , 12 11: And they said unto Moses, Because there were no graves in Egypt, hast thou taken us away to die in the wilderness? wherefore hast thou dealt thus with us, to carry us forth out of Egypt? 12: Is not this the word that we did tell thee in Egypt, saying, Let us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians? For it had been better for us to serve the Egyptians, than that we should die in the wilderness. Numbers 32, verses 1 - 33 1: Now the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great multitude of cattle: and when they saw the land of Jazer, and the land of Gilead, that, behold, the place was a place for cattle; 2: The children of Gad and the children of Reuben came and spake unto Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and unto the princes of the congregation, saying, 3: Ataroth, and Dibon, and Jazer, and Nimrah, and Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Shebam, and Nebo, and Beon, 4: Even the country which the LORD smote before the congregation of Israel, is a land for cattle, and thy servants have cattle: 5: Wherefore, said they, if we have found grace in thy sight, let this land be given unto thy servants for a possession, and bring us not over Jordan. 6: And Moses said unto the children of Gad and to the children of Reuben, Shall your brethren go to war, and shall ye sit here? 7: And wherefore discourage ye the heart of the children of Israel from going over into the land which the LORD hath given them? 8: Thus did your fathers, when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the land. 9: For when they went up unto the valley of Eshcol, and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the children of Israel, that they should not go into the land which the LORD had given them. 10: And the LORD's anger was kindled the same time, and he sware, saying, 11: Surely none of the men that came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob; because they have not wholly followed me: 12: Save Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite, and Joshua the son of Nun: for they have wholly followed the LORD. 13: And the LORD's anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation, that had done evil in the sight of the LORD, was consumed. 14: And, behold, ye are risen up in your fathers' stead, an increase of sinful men, to augment yet the fierce anger of the LORD toward Israel. 15: For if ye turn away from after him, he will yet again leave them in the wilderness; and ye shall destroy all this people. 16: And they came near unto him, and said, We will build sheepfolds here for our cattle, and cities for our little ones: 17: But we ourselves will go ready armed before the children of Israel, until we have brought them unto their place: and our little ones shall dwell in the fenced cities because of the inhabitants of the land. 18: We will not return unto our houses, until the children of Israel have inherited every man his inheritance. 19: For we will not inherit with them on yonder side Jordan, or forward; because our inheritance is fallen to us on this side Jordan eastward. 20: And Moses said unto them, If ye will do this thing, if ye will go armed before the LORD to war, 21: And will go all of you armed over Jordan before the LORD, until he hath driven out his enemies from before him, 22: And the land be subdued before the LORD: then afterward ye shall return, and be guiltless before the LORD, and before Israel; and this land shall be your possession before the LORD. 23: But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the LORD: and be sure your sin will find you out. 24: Build you cities for your little ones, and folds for your sheep; and do that which hath proceeded out of your mouth. 25: And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben spake unto Moses, saying, Thy servants will do as my lord commandeth. 26: Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our cattle, shall be there in the cities of Gilead: 27: But thy servants will pass over, every man armed for war, before the LORD to battle, as my lord saith. 28: So concerning them Moses commanded Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the chief fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel: 29: And Moses said unto them, If the children of Gad and the children of Reuben will pass with you over Jordan, every man armed to battle, before the LORD, and the land shall be subdued before you; then ye shall give them the land of Gilead for a possession: 30: But if they will not pass over with you armed, they shall have possessions among you in the land of Canaan. 31: And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben answered, saying, As the LORD hath said unto thy servants, so will we do. 32: We will pass over armed before the LORD into the land of Canaan, that the possession of our inheritance on this side Jordan may be ours. 33: And Moses gave unto them, even to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, and unto half the tribe of Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the land, with the cities thereof in the coasts, even the cities of the country round about. Joshua 22, verses 11 - 31 11: And the children of Israel heard say, Behold, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh have built an altar over against the land of Canaan, in the borders of Jordan, at the passage of the children of Israel. 12: And when the children of Israel heard of it, the whole congregation of the children of Israel gathered themselves together at Shiloh, to go up to war against them. 13: And the children of Israel sent unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half tribe of Manasseh, into the land of Gilead, Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, 14: And with him ten princes, of each chief house a prince throughout all the tribes of Israel; and each one was an head of the house of their fathers among the thousands of Israel. 15: And they came unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half tribe of Manasseh, unto the land of Gilead, and they spake with them, saying, 16: Thus saith the whole congregation of the LORD, What trespass is this that ye have committed against the God of Israel, to turn away this day from following the LORD, in that ye have builded you an altar, that ye might rebel this day against the LORD? 17: Is the iniquity of Peor too little for us, from which we are not cleansed until this day, although there was a plague in the congregation of the LORD, 18: But that ye must turn away this day from following the LORD? and it will be, seeing ye rebel to day against the LORD, that to morrow he will be wroth with the whole congregation of Israel. 19: Notwithstanding, if the land of your possession be unclean, then pass ye over unto the land of the possession of the LORD, wherein the LORD's tabernacle dwelleth, and take possession among us: but rebel not against the LORD, nor rebel against us, in building you an altar beside the altar of the LORD our God. 20: Did not Achan the son of Zerah commit a trespass in the accursed thing, and wrath fell on all the congregation of Israel? and that man perished not alone in his iniquity. 21: Then the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh answered, and said unto the heads of the thousands of Israel, 22: The LORD God of gods, the LORD God of gods, he knoweth, and Israel he shall know; if it be in rebellion, or if in transgression against the LORD, (save us not this day,) 23: That we have built us an altar to turn from following the LORD, or if to offer thereon burnt offering or meat offering, or if to offer peace offerings thereon, let the LORD himself require it; 24: And if we have not rather done it for fear of this thing, saying, In time to come your children might speak unto our children, saying, What have ye to do with the LORD God of Israel? 25: For the LORD hath made Jordan a border between us and you, ye children of Reuben and children of Gad; ye have no part in the LORD: so shall your children make our children cease from fearing the LORD. 26: Therefore we said, Let us now prepare to build us an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice: 27: But that it may be a witness between us, and you, and our generations after us, that we might do the service of the LORD before him with our burnt offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our peace offerings; that your children may not say to our children in time to come, Ye have no part in the LORD. 28: Therefore said we, that it shall be, when they should so say to us or to our generations in time to come, that we may say again, Behold the pattern of the altar of the LORD, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings, nor for sacrifices; but it is a witness between us and you. 29: God forbid that we should rebel against the LORD, and turn this day from following the LORD, to build an altar for burnt offerings, for meat offerings, or for sacrifices, beside the altar of the LORD our God that is before his tabernacle. 30: And when Phinehas the priest, and the princes of the congregation and heads of the thousands of Israel which were with him, heard the words that the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the children of Manasseh spake, it pleased them. 31: And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the children of Manasseh, This day we perceive that the LORD is among us, because ye have not committed this trespass against the LORD: now ye have delivered the children of Israel out of the hand of the LORD. 1 Samuel 1, verses 14 - 17 14: And Eli said unto her, How long wilt thou be drunken? put away thy wine from thee. 15: And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD. 16: Count not thine handmaid for a daughter of Belial: for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto. 17: Then Eli answered and said, Go in peace: and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him. 1 Samuel 17, verse 28 28: And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle. 2 Samuel 10, verse 3 3: And the princes of the children of Ammon said unto Hanun their lord, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? hath not David rather sent his servants unto thee, to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it? Job 8 1: Then answered Bildad the Shuhite, and said, 2: How long wilt thou speak these things? and how long shall the words of thy mouth be like a strong wind? 3: Doth God pervert judgment? or doth the Almighty pervert justice? 4: If thy children have sinned against him, and he have cast them away for their transgression; 5: If thou wouldest seek unto God betimes, and make thy supplication to the Almighty; 6: If thou wert pure and upright; surely now he would awake for thee, and make the habitation of thy righteousness prosperous. 7: Though thy beginning was small, yet thy latter end should greatly increase. 8: For inquire, I pray thee, of the former age, and prepare thyself to the search of their fathers: 9: (For we are but of yesterday, and know nothing, because our days upon earth are a shadow:) 10: Shall not they teach thee, and tell thee, and utter words out of their heart? 11: Can the rush grow up without mire? can the flag grow without water? 12: Whilst it is yet in his greenness, and not cut down, it withereth before any other herb. 13: So are the paths of all that forget God; and the hypocrite's hope shall perish: 14: Whose hope shall be cut off, and whose trust shall be a spider's web. 15: He shall lean upon his house, but it shall not stand: he shall hold it fast, but it shall not endure. 16: He is green before the sun, and his branch shooteth forth in his garden. 17: His roots are wrapped about the heap, and seeth the place of stones. 18: If he destroy him from his place, then it shall deny him, saying, I have not seen thee. 19: Behold, this is the joy of his way, and out of the earth shall others grow. 20: Behold, God will not cast away a perfect man, neither will he help the evil doers: 21: Till he fill thy mouth with laughing, and thy lips with rejoicing. 22: They that hate thee shall be clothed with shame; and the dwelling place of the wicked shall come to nought. Job 15 1: Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said, 2: Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind? 3: Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good? 4: Yea, thou castest off fear, and restrainest prayer before God. 5: For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty. 6: Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I: yea, thine own lips testify against thee. 7: Art thou the first man that was born? or wast thou made before the hills? 8: Hast thou heard the secret of God? and dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself? 9: What knowest thou, that we know not? what understandest thou, which is not in us? 10: With us are both the grayheaded and very aged men, much elder than thy father. 11: Are the consolations of God small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee? 12: Why doth thine heart carry thee away? and what do thy eyes wink at, 13: That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth? 14: What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous? 15: Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight. 16: How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water? 17: I will shew thee, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare; 18: Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it: 19: Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them. 20: The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor. 21: A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him. 22: He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword. 23: He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand. 24: Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle. 25: For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty. 26: He runneth upon him, even on his neck, upon the thick bosses of his bucklers: 27: Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks. 28: And he dwelleth in desolate cities, and in houses which no man inhabiteth, which are ready to become heaps. 29: He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth. 30: He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away. 31: Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence. 32: It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green. 33: He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive. 34: For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery. 35: They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit. Job 22 1: Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said, 2: Can a man be profitable unto God, as he that is wise may be profitable unto himself? 3: Is it any pleasure to the Almighty, that thou art righteous? or is it gain to him that thou makest thy ways perfect? 4: Will he reprove thee for fear of thee? will he enter with thee into judgment? 5: Is not thy wickedness great? and thine iniquities infinite? 6: For thou hast taken a pledge from thy brother for nought, and stripped the naked of their clothing. 7: Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, and thou hast withholden bread from the hungry. 8: But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; and the honourable man dwelt in it. 9: Thou has sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken. 10: Therefore snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubleth thee; 11: Or darkness, that thou canst not see; and abundance of waters cover thee. 12: Is not God in the height of heaven? and behold the height of the stars, how high they are! 13: And thou sayest, How doth God know? can he judge through the dark cloud? 14: Thick clouds are a covering to him, that he seeth not; and he walketh in the circuit of heaven. 15: Hast thou marked the old way which wicked men have trodden? 16: Which were cut down out of time, whose foundation was overflown with a flood: 17: Which said unto God, Depart from us: and what can the Almighty do for them? 18: Yet he filled their houses with good things: but the counsel of the wicked is far from me. 19: The righteous see it, and are glad: and the innocent laugh them to scorn. 20: Whereas our substance is not cut down, but the remnant of them the fire consumeth. 21: Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee. 22: Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart. 23: If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacles. 24: Then shalt thou lay up gold as dust, and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks. 25: Yea, the Almighty shall be thy defence, and thou shalt have plenty of silver. 26: For then shalt thou have thy delight in the Almighty, and shalt lift up thy face unto God. 27: Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he shall hear thee, and thou shalt pay thy vows. 28: Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways. 29: When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person. 30: He shall deliver the island of the innocent: and it is delivered by the pureness of thine hands. Job 42, verses 7 , 8 7: And it was so, that after the LORD had spoken these words unto Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against thee, and against thy two friends: for ye have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job hath. 8: Therefore take unto you now seven bullocks and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering; and my servant Job shall pray for you: for him will I accept: lest I deal with you after your folly, in that ye have not spoken of me the thing which is right, like my servant Job. Job 11, verses 1 - 6 1: Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said, 2: Should not the multitude of words be answered? and should a man full of talk be justified? 3: Should thy lies make men hold their peace? and when thou mockest, shall no man make thee ashamed? 4: For thou hast said, My doctrine is pure, and I am clean in thine eyes. 5: But oh that God would speak, and open his lips against thee; 6: And that he would shew thee the secrets of wisdom, that they are double to that which is! Know therefore that God exacteth of thee less than thine iniquity deserveth. Job 20 1: Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said, 2: Therefore do my thoughts cause me to answer, and for this I make haste. 3: I have heard the check of my reproach, and the spirit of my understanding causeth me to answer. 4: Knowest thou not this of old, since man was placed upon earth, 5: That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment? 6: Though his excellency mount up to the heavens, and his head reach unto the clouds; 7: Yet he shall perish for ever like his own dung: they which have seen him shall say, Where is he? 8: He shall fly away as a dream, and shall not be found: yea, he shall be chased away as a vision of the night. 9: The eye also which saw him shall see him no more; neither shall his place any more behold him. 10: His children shall seek to please the poor, and his hands shall restore their goods. 11: His bones are full of the sin of his youth, which shall lie down with him in the dust. 12: Though wickedness be sweet in his mouth, though he hide it under his tongue; 13: Though he spare it, and forsake it not; but keep it still within his mouth: 14: Yet his meat in his bowels is turned, it is the gall of asps within him. 15: He hath swallowed down riches, and he shall vomit them up again: God shall cast them out of his belly. 16: He shall suck the poison of asps: the viper's tongue shall slay him. 17: He shall not see the rivers, the floods, the brooks of honey and butter. 18: That which he laboured for shall he restore, and shall not swallow it down: according to his substance shall the restitution be, and he shall not rejoice therein. 19: Because he hath oppressed and hath forsaken the poor; because he hath violently taken away an house which he builded not; 20: Surely he shall not feel quietness in his belly, he shall not save of that which he desired. 21: There shall none of his meat be left; therefore shall no man look for his goods. 22: In the fulness of his sufficiency he shall be in straits: every hand of the wicked shall come upon him. 23: When he is about to fill his belly, God shall cast the fury of his wrath upon him, and shall rain it upon him while he is eating. 24: He shall flee from the iron weapon, and the bow of steel shall strike him through. 25: It is drawn, and cometh out of the body; yea, the glittering sword cometh out of his gall: terrors are upon him. 26: All darkness shall be hid in his secret places: a fire not blown shall consume him; it shall go ill with him that is left in his tabernacle. 27: The heaven shall reveal his iniquity; and the earth shall rise up against him. 28: The increase of his house shall depart, and his goods shall flow away in the day of his wrath. 29: This is the portion of a wicked man from God, and the heritage appointed unto him by God. John 1, verse 46 46: And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see. Acts 21, verse 28 28: Crying out, Men of Israel, help: This is the man, that teacheth all men every where against the people, and the law, and this place: and further brought Greeks also into the temple, and hath polluted this holy place.
