1-17-03 - DREAM - I was in an office, working on my family's genealogy.
I typed my grandfather's name into the computer and in less than a moment,
I did this for each grandparent, then for each great-grandparent I knew the name of.
I was amazed that the computer could find all this information for the
exact person
After the searching was done, I pressed PRINT and the machine sent a copy
of all
There was a woman there who took this piece of paper and held it behind
a 6"
She then showed me that she could project a hologram of anything she could
put on
I went upstairs then and a man walked by and someone let him in the window.

NOTES ON HOW TO LOOK FOR YOUR RELATIVES
To look for relatives on line, using the links below, you need to know your grandfather's or great-grandfather's names and approximately when they were born. The newest government census listed currently is 1930. Some of the sites now have census as far back as 1810, but the older census only listed the men. Also, they only listed the names of land-owners, not wives, children, servants, or slaves. The newest census for 1930 gives much more information, including what the person did for a living.
Unfortunately, you cannot look up female names unless they lived alone or were head of household. Some of the census are indexed by name and give the information needed, other census only tell you what page to look on and you will need to click on a link and read the page for yourself. In the old days, only the men were recognized, but if you can find a census listing with the man's name, they also list the wife and children - usually first name only, but sometimes with the middle initial. Maiden names of women are never given unless the woman lives alone and never married. This makes is quite difficult to trace the women in the family. As for tracing brothers and sisters in the same family, you usually need to know something about the family before you even start. However, if you can look up your great-grandfather, and the census lists his children, you will then know your grandfather's brothers and sisters names. However, if the sister got married, there is no record of her beyond that unless the state she lived in also has a listing of marriages. That is more rare to find. You can also look for death dates in the Social Security death index if the person was in the Social Security System. These are also not up to date though.
If the grandfather or great-grandfather was born in another country, other than the U.S., it will get even more difficult to find them. Some of the ship's lists are on line, which brought them to the U.S., but not all of them, and not all countries. Hopefully, eventually they will be posted, so give it a try and see if you are one of the lucky ones. Also, know that if you have a common last name like Smith, Brown, Schultz, or some other popular last name, it will be harder to track your relatives. The more unique your last name is, the easier it will be to find your own relatives. However, also be aware that the records frequently mis-spell the names, especially coming into the country from a foreign country. When they gave their names to the clerk, the clerk would write down what they heard and if the person didn't speak English, that's as good as it got. They might have it right, but be aware that a letter or two might be different. Also, name changes from European to Americanized names was done, example: Pieter became Peter. Johann became John. etc. I also found a relative whose name was John, spelled Jhn. The census records are fraught with error. Just be aware in advance and keep trying. The more sites you use, the more information you are likely to find.
Looking for relatives is challenging and can get quite addictive once you get started. It also is not cheap. The main links charge a fee, but if you sign up for a month and get two weeks free, you can get quite a lot of information in that time span. However, once you sign up, it will be hard to give up your access and not look for more relatives, so if you start looking, you may as well also know that you can get hooked doing this. It's a lot of fun. There are some free sites, usually with little information, and usually with links back to the paying sites. You can find some information on the internet without using these links, but it will be harder and you will only find whatever other relatives you have are putting there. You might get lucky, so its always worth a try. You never know if someone else in your family is also looking for relatives unless you look.

You can also find information about your relatives by sending a form to Vital Records Departments of the state your relative lived in and asking for birth certificates, marriage licenses, or death certificates. Those records will have the names of the parents on them and sometimes whether there were brothers or sisters born before them on the birth certificates. There is a fee for these records. Check with the government offices for the fee before you ask. All states have these offices listed on the internet, and usually a form can be printed out which is easy to use. Just fill it out, send a check or money order and in a few weeks, if you are lucky, you will get the information you need right in your mailbox. However, sometimes the records don't exist anymore if they are too old, or if the office had an unfortunate fire in the past. It's always worth taking a chance though. You might be one of the lucky ones.
