MARS DATABASE

The Red Planet is about to be spectacular!
This month and next,  2003, Earth is catching up with Mars in an  encounter that
will culminate in the closest  approach between the two planets in
recorded  history. The next time Mars may come this close is
in 2287. Due to the way Jupiter's gravity tugs on
Mars and perturbs its orbit, astronomers can only be
certain that Mars has not come this close to Earth
in the Last 5,000 years, but it may be as long as
60,000 years before it happens again.

The encounter will culminate on August 27th when
Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles of Earth and
will be (next to the moon) the brightest object in
the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9
and will appear 25.11 arc seconds wide. At a modest
75-power magnification

Mars will be easy to spot. At the beginning of August it will rise
 in the east at 10p.m.
and reach its azimuth at about 3 a.m.

By the end of August when the two planets are
closest, Mars will rise at nightfall and reach its
highest point in the sky at 12:30a.m. That's pretty
convenient to see something that no human being has
seen in recorded history. So, mark your calendar at
the beginning of August to see Mars grow
progressively brighter and brighter throughout the
month.

10,000 New Images of Mars

Oct 1, 2003 -

Thousands of newly released portraits of martian landscapes from NASA's Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft testify to the diversity of ways geological processes have sculpted the surface of our neighboring planet.

Swirling textures that some scientists call "taffy-pull terrain” fill one new image from the plains of southern Mars, for example. Other images reveal details of features such as wind-whipped polar dunes and steep-sided valleys carved by flowing water or lava.

The 10,232 newly released pictures from the Mars Orbiter Camera on Mars Global Surveyor bring the total number of images in the camera's online gallery to more than 134,000. The new batch is at: http://www.msss.com/mars_images/moc/2003/09/30/.

"Mars just keeps astounding us with its complexity," said Dr. Ken Edgett, staff scientist for Malin Space Science Systems, San Diego, Calif, which built and operates the Mars Orbiter Camera.

The new group of images was taken between August 2002 and February 2003, then validated and archived by the camera team. It includes many views of north polar terrain, extremely clear-atmosphere views of a deep southern basin named Hellas Planitia, and a variety of martian landforms between the north pole and the southern middle latitudes. The pictures show martian surface details down to the size of a large sport utility vehicle.

Since Mars Global Surveyor began orbiting Mars six years ago, the mission has provided a wealth of information about the planet's atmosphere and interior, as well at its surface.

Evaluation of landing sites for NASA's Spirit and Opportunity, two Mars Exploration Rover spacecraft due to land on Mars in January 2004, relied heavily on mineral mapping, detailed imagery and topographic measurements by Global Surveyor.

Additional information about Mars Global Surveyor is available online at: http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/mgs/.

In addition to semi-annual releases of large collections of archived pictures, the Mars Orbiter Camera team posts a new image daily and recently began soliciting public suggestions for camera targets on Mars. The full gallery is available at: http://www.msss.com/moc_gallery/.

Approaching Mars

Earth and Mars are converging for a close encounter in August. The red planet is already an appealing target for sky watchers.

June 18, 2003: Count slowly: one one-thousand, two one-thousand, three one-thousand.... You just got about 30 km closer to the planet Mars.

Earth and Mars are rapidly converging. On August 27, 2003--the date of closest approach--the two worlds will be 56 million km apart. That's a long way by Earth standards, but only a short distance on the scale of the solar system. NASA, the European Space Agency and Japan are all sending spacecraft to Mars this year. It's a good time to go.

Right: This is what Mars looked like through the eye piece of an 8" telescope on June 11th. Image credit: Ron Wayman of Tampa, FL.

Between now and August, Mars will brighten until it "blazes forth against the dark background of space with a splendor that outshines Sirius and rivals the giant Jupiter himself." Astronomer Percival Lowell, who famously mapped the canals of Mars, wrote those words to describe the planet during a similar close encounter in the 19th century.

Already Mars is eye-catching. You can see it this month in the morning sky--bright, steady and remarkably red. Only Venus near the sun is brighter.

Amateur astronomers looking through backyard telescopes have reported in recent days great views of Mars's south polar cap. Made of frozen water and carbon dioxide ("dry ice"), it reflects sunlight well. "I can see the polar ice vividly using my 8-inch telescope," says Ron Wayman of Tampa, Florida. He's also spotted "some faint darker-shaded areas on the surface."

Such markings will become clearer in the weeks ahead. On June 1st Mars was 12.5 arcseconds across and it glowed like a -1st magnitude star. On August 27th it will be twice as wide (25 arcseconds) and six times brighter (magnitude -2.9).

Much has been made of the fact that the August 27th encounter with Mars is the closest in some 60,000 years. Neanderthals were the last to observe Mars so favorably placed. This is true. It's also a bit of hype. Mars and Earth have been almost this close many times in recent history.

Some examples: Aug. 23, 1924; Aug. 18, 1845; Aug. 13, 1766. In each case Mars and Earth were approximately 56 million km apart.

Astronomers call these close encounters "perihelic oppositions." Perihelic means Mars is near perihelion--its closest approach to the sun. (The orbit of Mars, like that of all planets, is an ellipse, so the distance between the sun and Mars varies.) Opposition means that the sun, Earth and Mars are in a straight line with Earth in the middle. Mars and the sun are on opposite sides of the sky. When Mars is at opposition and at perihelion--at the same time--it is very close to Earth.

August 27th is indeed the best perihelic opposition since the days of the Neanderthals, but it scarcely differs from other more recent ones. That's fine because all perihelic oppositions of Mars are spectacular.

Mars in the morning sky on Thursday, June 19th, as seen from mid-northern latitudes

Mars is a morning planet now. You have to wake up early to see it. Soon, though, it will be more conveniently placed. By mid-July Mars will rise in the east around 11 p.m. local time. In late August it will appear as soon as the sun sets. It won't be long before everyone can see Mars at a civilized hour.

Mars orbiter eyes Phobos over planet's horizon

NASA/JPL NEWS RELEASE

Posted: June 24, 2003

Images from the Mars Orbiter Camera aboard NASA's Mars Global Surveyor capture a faint yet distinct glimpse of the elusive Phobos, the larger and innermost of Mars' two moons. The moon, which usually rises in the west and moves rapidly across the sky to set in the east twice a day, is shown setting over Mars' afternoon horizon.

Phobos is so close to the martian surface (less than 6,000 kilometers or 3,728 miles away), it only appears above the horizon at any instant from less than a third of the planet's surface. From the areas where it is visible, Phobos looks only half as large as Earth's full moon. Like our satellite, it always keeps the same side facing Mars. The tiny moon is also one of the darkest and mostly colorless (dark grey) objects in the solar system, so for the color image two exposures were needed to see it next to Mars. The faint orange-red hue seen in the wide-angle image is a combination of the light coming from Mars and the way the camera processes the image.

The top picture is a high-resolution image that shows Phobos' "trailing" hemisphere (the part facing opposite the direction of its orbit). At a range of 9,670 kilometers (6,009 miles), this image has a resolution of 35.9 meters (117.8 feet) per pixel. The image width (diagonal from lower left to upper right) is just over 24 kilometers (15 miles).

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., manages Mars Global Surveyor for NASA's Office of Space Science in Washington, D.C. JPL is a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. JPL's industrial partner is Lockheed Martin Astronautics, Denver, which developed and operates the spacecraft. Malin Space Science Systems and the California Institute of Technology built the Mars Orbiter Camera, and Malin Space Science Systems operates the camera from its facilities in San Diego, Calif.

Red Planet never closer than now

By Dan Vergano, USA TODAY

If the Martians want to invade, now would be the time. The Red Planet is making its closest pass by Earth in 50,000 years over the next few months. As it happens, the real invasion is by Earth. Five separate space missions are headed to Mars as that planet passes into "opposition" this summer. Opposition is astronomers' jargon for another planet lining up with our Earth and sun.

Close passages occur every few years, as Earth, running a faster inside track around the sun, laps its planetary peer. For sky watchers, the excitement arises from the fact that on Aug. 27 the two planets pass as close as they ever get, about 35 million miles apart instead of the usual distance of about 60 million miles. This will allow a particularly nice view of Mars.

"Absolutely it will be a mind-blower for amateur astronomers," says editor David Eicher of Astronomy magazine.

The planets pass so close this year because both orbit the sun in ways that are not perfectly circular. When Earth is in a more distant part of its orbit in relation to the sun, and Mars is in the part of its orbit that's closest the sun, the two planets are closer to each other.

Eicher says July may be the best time to look at the Red Planet, as Martian dust storms are expected to obscure the view next month.

In mid-July, Mars rises at about 10:30 p.m. in the constellation Aquarius in the southeastern sky in the USA. Except for the waning moon, to the right and above the planet, Mars will likely be the brightest object, " a notably deep orange," in the nighttime sky, Eicher says. To the naked eye, Mars will look about 1/40th the size of a full moon.

Timeline of Mars events for 2003 and Early 2004

Mars observers have a lot to look forward to in the coming year.

by Daniel Troiani

On August 27, 2003, Mars will be closer to Earth than it has been for many millennia. But observers will be able to enjoy the extroadinary event much longer than just that one day. Here is a guide describing what to look for when, which will help you to take advantage of Mars's latest opposition throughout the year.

February 2003

Mars will at reach 6" of arc on the 25th. For observers with 4- to 6-inch telescopes, the apparition truly begins this month. Surface details will be low contrast. Is there a polar hood or any cloud activity? Northern clouds should be frequent and both polar hoods should be distinct. This month corresponds to northern mid-summer (southern mid-winter).

April 2003

Late southern winter begins on the 9th. There could be frost or fog developing in Hellas. When fog develops in Hellas and becomes very bright, some observers mistake it for the south polar cap. The south polar hood will be present and the edge of the north polar hood might be visible.

May 2003

Mars will be at southern spring equinox (northern autumnal equinox) on May 6. The south polar cap should be at maximum diameter (subtending about 65°). Frost or fog in Hellas may persist but will soon clear up. The south polar cap comes out from the darkness of winter as the hood thins to form the so-called "Life Saver Effect." The south cap is clear of the phase terminator. Late in the month, southern clouds should be frequent with the south polar hood continuing to thin. Are both polar hoods visible? Eastern Syrtis Major may be fading and broadening. Hellas could become bright again. Surface details will increase in contrast. There is a possibility of W-shaped clouds (called "W-clouds") appearing over the Tharsis-Amazonis region.

June 2003

In June most of the phenomena of interest will be in the southern polar region. Expect a bright south polar cap with the projection Novissima Thyle at 300° to 333° longitude. The dark rift Rima Augusta might connect from 60° to 270°. Rima Australis will be visible in the south polar cap. Again look for the W-clouds over Tharsis. Look for the anticipated bright projection of Argenteus Mons. By late June, the Rima Australis will be visible in the south polar cap (290° to 350°). Also, keep an eye out late in the month for possible small dust clouds in Serpentis-Hellespontus in Hellas.

July 2003

The dark rift Rima Augusta will reach from 60° to 270° longitude. Watch out for bright south polar cap projection Novissima and Argenteus Mons. The width of the south polar cap will be about 53° and slowly shrinking. By the end of June, the south polar cap will be in rapid regression. Remain vigilant for small dust clouds in Hellas or Noachis. Syrtis Major darkens and continues to shrink. Surface details will continue to increase in contrast. Bright, elongated Novissima Thyle extends from the south polar cap and becomes the isolated Novus Mons or "Mountains of Mitchell." The north polar hood should be prominent.

August 2003

Mars will have its closest approach on the 27th at 10h Universal Time, when it will appear 25.11" in size. It will reach opposition the next day at 18h UT in the constellation Aquarius. The south polar cap will be in rapid retreat with an isolated bright spot at 155° longitude. Novus Mons will be small. Rima Australis will widen. The atmosphere of Mars should be very clear during this period. Look for occasional limb hazes. Does the south polar hood or frost cover Hellas? Syrtis Major will be narrow. Orographic (mountain-formed) clouds (including the W-clouds) will be possible. Mars will be at perihelion — its closest approach to the sun — on the 29th. The possibility exists for bright frost in desert areas. Watch for the onset of dust clouds in the southern hemisphere over Serpentis-Hellespontus.

September 2003

The south polar cap width is now only about 21°. Watch out for major dust storms; this is the first peak period for dust. Novus Mons is reduced to a few bright patches and will soon disappear altogether. Numerous bright patches are visible, with some in Hellas. This being the windy season on Mars, dust clouds could be present. The southern summer solstice is on the 29th. The atmosphere will be clearing, with white clouds especially infrequent at this time. Watch for "planetary system" cloud bands visible in blue light.

October 2003

Mars is now just past southern summer solstice. Watch out for W-clouds, but otherwise there will be a reduction in the number of white clouds. Continue to watch out for any kind of dust activity, especially in the south.

November 2003

Orographic clouds (W-clouds) over the Tharsis volcanoes might be visible. The south polar cap will be very small at this point. Look for white areas using blue or violet filters.

December 2003

Watch out for major dust storms during this time as the second period for storms peaks. Is the south polar cap visible in mid-summer? Edom Promontorium usually becomes bright now.

January 2004

Watch out for ice-fog activity in Hellas. The north polar cap will be large with the hood present. Look for W-clouds.

NASA's MARS ROVERS LANDING DURING JANUARY

February 2004

The apparition starts to wane for most observers as Mars becomes only 6" across on the 18th. Views of surface details are becoming ill-defined. Discrete white clouds and white areas should start to be seen now. The north polar cap will have a large hood present. Syrtis Major begins to expand to its east.

Russia plans Mars nuclear station

By Artyom Liss

BBC, Moscow

Russian scientists have announced plans to build a nuclear power station on Mars.

They say that all the necessary technical drawings have now been completed, and - after a few minor niggles have been ironed out - all will be ready for the construction work to begin.

Russia hopes to set up a permanent base on Mars  The power plant should be up and running by 2030.

But experts are already asking questions about the feasibility of the project.

The first extra-terrestrial nuclear power station will serve the permanent research camp which, Russian scientists believe, could be set up on Mars within the next 30 years.

Deputy chief engineer of Red Star - a state scientific company closely affiliated with Russia's Nuclear Energy Ministry - says the station will be constructed in the mountainous areas of Mars, possibly in one of the canyons.

Cosmic building site

It will produce enough power for future Russian missions to the planet to be fully self-contained and will not need more than six engineers to maintain.

The Red Planet is extremely inhospitable  Scientists say that the station is now almost ready to be built - all they have to do is to find a way to protect staff and environment from radiation.  The only stumbling block is how to deliver ready-made building blocks to a construction site 300 million kilometres (186.4 million miles) away from Earth.

The plan is that the heavier equipment will be delivered to Mars by an automatic lander - like the European Beagle which is now making its way to the Red Planet.

The scientists say that more delicate goods will arrive in a manned spaceship.

Its crew will build both the station and the research base for all future expeditions.
